On October 3rd, 2009, the fifth edition of the Giornata del Contemporaneo (Day of Contemporary Art) will take place all around Italy: an annual event promoted by the AMACI – Associazione dei Musei d’Arte Contemporanea Italiani (Association of Italian Museums of Contemporary Art) focused on the art of our times and its public. All the association’s museums – as well as over 800 venues across the country working with contemporary art – will be freely open to the public for a day.

The initiative, promoted by AMACI and by now at its fifth edition, has witnessed over the years a remarkable increase in the number of its participants: from 180 in 2005 to the over 800 in 2009. Museums, galleries, associations, public and private art venues will open their doors to introduce artists and new ideas through shows, workshops, events and lectures: a manifold schedule offering the not-to-be-missed opportunity to experience directly the liveliness and riches of contemporary art, and to experiment the pivotal role it plays in cultural, social and economical development.

As for its previous editions, AMACI has charged an internationally acclaimed contemporary Italian artist with developing a concept for the event. After Michelangelo Pistoletto, Maurizio Cattelan and Paola Pivi, this year’s artist will be Luigi Ontani.

Ingadgiato is the title of the work the artist specifically conceived for this event: a photographic self-portrait where Ontani, with an eclectic and controversial language, depicts himself as trapped in a fishing net adorned with gadgets and promotional material for the association’s museums.

The Day of Contemporary Art has always involved much more than art, showing a deep commitment to social issues. This year, the thin thread of experimentation and research ties AMACI to AIRC, the Italian Association for Cancer Research, engaged since 1965 in the struggle against cancer. AMACI and contemporary art are committed to raising public awareness of the important role Italy is playing in international medical research.

The Day of Contemporary Art, under the High Patronage of the President of the Italian Republic, has been supported by the Directorate General for Landscape, Fine Arts, Architecture and Contemporary Arts within the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, by the European Commission Representation in Milan, by the Office of the Prime Minister, by the Senate of the Republic, by the Italian House of Representatives, by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, by the Conference of Regions and Autonomous Provinces, by the Union of Italian Provinces, by the National Association of Italian Municipalities, and by ICOM Italy.

UniCredit Group renews its support as the event’s Official Partner, while Terna S.p.A. is its new Supporting Partner.

AMACI – Associazione dei Musei d’Arte Contemporanea Italiani is a not-for-profit association of 25 of the most representative contemporary art museums in Italy.
Born in 2003 with the mission of supporting contemporary art and institutional policies involving it, AMACI aims at consolidating every year its role as an institution and reference point for the promotion of contemporary artistic research in Italy and worldwide.
