The Italian-based International exhibition of modern and contemporary art is the first date on the
2009 calendar.

ArteFiera Art First is one of the world’s leading art fairs, the event where market tendencies are confirmed, new trends are previewed and where you can encounter extraordinary works selected by a Committee of international experts.

A stroll through the corridors and the booths of the fair will present an unique opportunity to admire all at once masterpieces from the Italian Avant-garde There will be highlights of the Italian Avant–garde by Alberto Burri, Lucio Fontana, Fausto Melotti and Giorgio Morandi, as well as works by leading international artists. Among the booths shack up the Pop Art of Andy Warhol, Tom Wesselmann, Keith Haring, the Conceptualism of Piero Manzoni and Enrico Castellani, the surrealism of Max Ernst and Jean Miro’, the feminine vision of Louise Bourgeois, Carla Accardi and Marina Abramovic; the Arte Povera of Giovanni Anselmo, Mario Merz, Giuseppe Penone, Michelangelo Pistoletto and Gilberto Zorio, to the latest interpreters of the international contemporary scenario, such as Vanessa Beecroft, Anish Kapoor, Maurizio Cattelan, and Paola Pivi.

Under the artistic direction of Silvia Evangelisti, ArteFiera Art First 2009 will offer gallery owners, collectors, visitors, and art lovers new features, starting with the exhibition spaces themselves: the 2009 edition will be held in Halls 15 (just built), 18 and 20, all on a single level, with museum-quality spaces and a sought layout.

To confirm the openness of ArteFiera Art First to the international art scene, Julia Trolp former curator at Mart museum of Rovereto, Italy, will join the staff, in the capacity of Junior International Artistic Director.

The meeting and talks format will be revised and devoted to all aspects of collecting: private, public, and by banks, with Italian and foreign guest speakers. In addition to major galleries, special attention will be paid to the plans and projects of young galleries – in business not more than 5 years – which will be centrally located for maximum visibility and lively comparison with established galleries.

The 4th edition of BOLOGNA ART FIRST, to be held from 23 January to the end of February, will present a striking and original series of city scenes in installations by artists represented by galleries exhibiting at the fair and selected by a specially appointed committee of experts.

The collaboration with the City of Bologna is stronger than ever: for the third year, a list of shows, films, meetings, and performances will be presented at many locations in Bologna and in Emilia Romagna as part of the Arte Fiera OFF programme.

At MAMbo, Bologna’s new Museum of Modern Art, the large anthological exhibition devoted to Giorgio Morandi will open on 22 January 2009.

On Saturday 24 January, after its successful first edition, ART WHITE NIGHT will transform Bologna into a grand showcase for contemporary art, with special evening hours for museums, galleries and shops in the historical centre, plus concerts, shows and entertainment in the city’s streets.
