The first written definition of beauty in East Asia, found in the earliest Chinese dictionary compiled by the second-century philologist Xu Shen: “Beauty means ‘delicious’. The character for beauty (mei) consists of the graphs for ‘sheep’ (yang) and ‘big’ (da). Among the six domestic animals i.e. horse, ox, sheep, pig, dog, and chicken the sheep is the first of those which provide meals (shan). Beauty is therefore synonymous with ‘goodness’ (shan) because ‘goodness’ and ‘meals’ are homonyms in Chinese.” Xu Shen: Shuowen jiezi zhu (with commentaries by Duan Yucai), Shanghai guji chubanshe, Shanghai 1981
