Cosmo Vitale features new works by Gimhongsok and Sora Kim in their first Los Angeles exhibition. Sora Kim presents a reconstruction of the 18th Century mask dance, Bongsan Tal Chum. The opening day reception will feature a live reincarnation of this Korean national treasure. Gimhongsok presents four new works as well as the video work G5 recently featured their exhibition Antarctica at ArtSonje Center in Seoul and a second version of the work Mara’s Red. Other works include a new single-channel video, The Talk and a three by ten meter text work, Scandal.

Both Gimhongsok and Sora Kim use art as a means of communication, creating non-hierarchical exchanges that serve to de-institutionalize space. Their work employs common elements from people and daily life organized in ways that create unexpected spaces and dialogue. Gimhongsok and Sora Kim are recognized internationally as independent artists and frequent collaborators. Last year, their collaborative sculpture and sound installation Chronic Historical Interpretation Syndrome was featured in Zones of Urgency, curated by Hou Hanru, in the 50th Venice Biennale (2003).

Gimhongsok has exhibited his work at P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center, New York; Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery; Taipei Fine Arts Museum; Espai d’Art Contemporani de Castello, Valencia. Sora Kim has exhibited her work at the Mattress Factory, Pittsburgh; Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery; Earl Lu Gallery, Singapore; Rodin Gallery, Seoul. The artists have exhibited together at the 2002 Gwangju Biennial; 2003 Echigo-Tsumari Triennial; the 50th Venice Biennale; and ArtSonje Center, Seoul. Both artists live and work in Seoul.
