Expand your knowledge and skills while in the inspiring environment of the HGK in Basel, Switzerland. For everybody who is interested in the latest know-how and experimental approaches in the artistic-creative field and is seeking exchange on a professional level.

Join one or more of our compact summer workshops:

Artistic Identity Exploration: June 21–25, 2022 with Danielle Dreier and Martina Siegwolf.
Learn about and experience firsthand artistic methods for exploring identity and diversity using hair as an example.

Inclusive Storytelling: June 27–July 1 with Azam Mazoumzadeh

Type Design: June 27–July 1 with Prof. Philipp Stamm
It is in the detail of each letterform that its character lies. The interaction of drawing by hand and further development on the computer will allow for a differentiated, and perhaps new, awareness and appreciation for type forms.

Decolonizing Digital Archives: July 4–8 with Lucie Kolb, Selena Savić, Flavia Caviezel, Bernhard Garnicnig and Karolina Sobecka
The workshop assembles transdisciplinary approaches to archival issues and aims to illuminate how post-digital and decolonizing practices can support digitization efforts that meet contemporary and future complexities.

Digital gaming culture: July 4–8 with Laura Schuppli
Develop game content on specific topics to be more accessible to certain target groups and get more people involved in your cultural activities. The workshop will also help you put “future-oriented learning” into practice.

Inquiry by Design: July 4–8 with Prof. Michael Renner
This workshop introduces you to the practice-based issues of iconic research in the area of Visual Communication.

Drawing with codes: July 11–15 with Anna Flurina Kälin
The computer, with its extreme precision, incredible speed and blind obedience, is a novel tool for creating images; one that serves as a contrast to all images that were not machine made. You will work with this contrast.

Poster Design: July 11–15 with Jiri Oplatek
Pursue approaches that lead to precise and aesthetically pleasing poster designs and experimentally test various ideas in drafts and refine, analyze, question, and condense them into a final poster.

Immersive Images: July 18–July 22 with Lena Frei
Get an insight into creating a 3D project in Unity and learn how to use 3D models, shaders, lighting, and how to program simple interactions with the C# programming language.

Design History—the Myth of Swiss Style: August 8–12 with Sandra Bischler
Internationally, Swiss graphic design enjoys an excellent reputation: This workshop offers you an introduction to the history of Swiss graphic design based on current research studies.

Podcasts: August 8–12 with Patricia Huijnen and Isabella Maund
In keeping with the motto “radio is to podcasts as television is to YouTube”, you will dive into the intimate, exciting, chattering world of podcasts and explore the medium of podcasts as part of a digital culture.

Perception Studies: August 15–19 with Claire Reymond
In this workshop questions that explore the viewers’ perception will be developed and tested, and different approaches to data collection will be presented and applied.

Sustainable networking: August 15–19 with Dr Andrea Geipel
Examine different examples of multidisciplinary projects and discuss them with respect to diversity, inclusion and co-production, and figure out ways to integrate these aspects into your own work.

Design Research: August 22–26 with Prof. Michael Renner
Learn about a design-based approach to research: how to formulate a research question and how to develop answers to a question through the very process of design.
