This master is a unique opportunity to learn from the experience of lumbung-documenta fifteen and build a solidarity network amongst a new generation of collectives.

On the occasion of documenta fifteen, 68 artist and interdisciplinary collectives came together to build a lasting “lumbung”; to work towards the endurance of locally anchored social art practices and their ecosystems. Lumbung is an Indonesian pre-colonial rural practice where the surplus of the harvest is collectively governed, shared, and celebrated for the future wellbeing of the community. During documenta fifteen it grew into even more: both a rhizomatic collective of collectives, and the practice of decentralised collective redistribution, transforming the art institution and its exhibitionary logic.

Participants in the program study locally anchored commoning practices such as Lumbung, Maaya, De Meent, the Commons, Buen Vivir and Agraw. They build a discourse around socio-political and agro-ecological art practices and experiment with collectively managed economies. They acquire tools for hosting and harvesting, for collective organizing, creative administration and decision making.

The master is open to members of collectives with background in socio-political art practices, activism, agro-ecological and commons practice, or are participants in other kinds of collaborative platforms. They join De Appel curatorial programme participants in an offline study programme in Amsterdam, and have regular online interactions with Gudskul Collective Study participants and tutors in Jakarta.

Tutors are lumbung members and artists as well as other commoning experts. Participants form working groups of shared interests and join existing lumbung working groups such as lumbung.space, lumbung Kios and Gallery, lumbung land, lumbung radio and lumbung press. Each participant choses a harvest topic for the two years of the master, which is the basis for their final thesis.

At the end of each year a harvest festival takes place in Amsterdam and Jakarta.

More information on content and requirements of the master can be found on the Sandberg website. Questions can be sent to lumbungpractice [at] sandberg.nl. You can apply here.
