Art 34 Basel: The focal point of the international art world
Art 34 Basel is being held in Basel (Switzerland) from June 18 to
23,
2003. It is the world’s leading art show and annual meeting place of the
international art world. 270 galleries from each continent will be
taking
part. They are selected by the «Art Committee» from a record number
of 930
applications, and they will be showing works by over 1,500 artist of the
20th and 21st century. The outstanding reputation of Art Basel is based
on
the high quality and unique variety of the works of art and on the
international composition of its visitors. Special sectors will present
print graphics, film and one-person shows by young artists. The
exhibitors
are on a higher level than ever, and participation has been extended by
the addition of some interesting young galleries and leading dealers in
the field of vintage photography and print graphics. Most of the newly
admitted galleries do not come from the traditional metropolises of the
art world but from Eastern Europe, South Africa, the west coast of the
USA, Israel, Southern Europe, Scandinavia and the Benelux countries.
“The
quality of Art 34 Basel will be virtually unsurpassable, offering the
best
possible overview of modern and contemporary art”, commented
Samuel
Keller, director of Art Basel.
Every form of artistic expression will be represented at Art 34
Basel. The
repertoire ranges from paintings, drawings and editions through
sculptures
and installations to performance, Internet and video art. Works of art
costing a few thousand francs by young, yet-to-be discovered artists
will
be on display as well as museum-quality masterpieces priced at several
millions. A survey conducted by the Show Management has shown that 27%
of
the works of art exhibited by the galleries at Art Basel cost less than
5,000 euros. This result clearly shows that high quality work at
reasonable prices occupies an important place at Art Basel, and that the
Art Show is thus also an attractive market place for art enthusiasts
with
lower budgets. The «Art Unlimited» hall will show some extraordinary
projects on a large scale that cannot be seen and purchased at any other
art fair in the world. Over 50,000 visitors and approximately 1,500
media
representatives are expected at the 34th Art Basel, and the cultural
institutions of the city will be staging accompanying events and
exhibitions that are well worth a visit.
