MACRO – The Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome presents director Bartolomeo Pietromarchi‘s new exhibition and activities program making the museum a place for exchange and discussion, and a hub of cultural life in Rome.

MACRO’s two sites, the newly renovated industrial space in via Nizza and the ex-slaughterhouse in Rome’s Testaccio, will focus on three types of activities: MacroExpo, MacroLab and MacroLive. MacroExpo is on exhibition program of solo and group shows; MacroLab is a platform for artists, critics, curators, gallery owners, collectors and the public to interact; and MacroLive will host a program of talks, performance, conference and events.

Mircea Cantor, Sic Transit Gloria Mundi
March 16–May 6, 2012
The artist’s first solo show in an Italian museum and one of his most ambitious to date, presenting new works produced for the exhibition: Anima, a large wooden installation of St. Peter’s Basilica, a gold plated DNA strand and the film Sic transit gloria mundi represent beauty, time, life, and death, combining the sacred and the profane, seriousness and irony.

Marcello Maloberti, Blitz
March 16–May 6, 2012
For his solo show, Marcello Maloberti envisioned two actions, Blitz and Amen, to create a spectacular confrontation, interweaving physical energy and imagination, resistance and speed, order and disorder. Two site-specific installations, Sim Sala Bim and Katerpillar complete the show.

Going Around the Corner. Paths through the Berlingieri collections.
March 16–June 10, 2012
The first chapter of Collezionismi, dedicated to exploring and reflecting on both private and public art collections and featuring thirty outstanding pieces by Bruce Nauman, Andy Warhol, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Joseph Kosuth, Robert Ryman, Franz West, Maurizio Cattelan, Douglas Gordon, and Vanessa Beecroft.

Homage to Vettor Pisani
March 16–September 2, 2012
Homage to Vettor Pisani presents the works that brought Pisani international attention between 1970 and 1980, focusing on his collaboration with Michelangelo Pistoletto alongside photographs by Claudio Abate and Elisabetta Catalano, and materials from Pisani’s archive.

Christian Jankowski, Casting Jesus
March 16–May 6, 2012
MACRO will host the Italian debut of the video Casting Jesus by Christian Jankowski, shot at Santo Spirito in Sassia in Rome in 2011 within the sphere of the Spirito Due project.

MACRO Testaccio
Marco Tirelli
March 30–May 13, 2012
Featuring 25 works, conceived for the museum’s spaces, and relating to the architecture of the former slaughterhouse in Testaccio, the show explores the main themes and characteristics of the artist’s work. This exhibition is produced in collaboration with the Musée de Saint-Etienne where it will tour in 2013.

Bilingual catalogues of the exhibitions will be available in May 2012.

Finally, MACRO presents a first series of multiples donated by artists to support the museum and its activities.

Carola Bonfili, Graham Hudson, Luigi Presicce, Ishmael Randall Weeks

MACRO via Nizza
March 15, and by arrangement until May 20.
Four galleries have been transformed into studios, one for each artist. Four months of residency will feature numerous openings and opportunities to interact with the public. The first is “Studio in progress”, scheduled for March 15 and by prior arrangement until May 20 aims to give the public a glimpse of the artists’ creative and working processes by opening their studios.

MACRO/1:1projects ARCHIVE

MACRO Testaccio
Beginning March 30
An archive dedicated to young artists, its initial nucleus made up of material and documentation collected by the curatorial association 1:1projects, and ceded to MACRO as part of a long-term collaboration agreement.

MACROeo(electronicOrphanage)

MACRO, Area
March 16–May 23, 2012
The project MACROeo(electronicOrphanage), conceived by artist Miltos Manetas, is a platform to reflect on new technologies and the horizons opened up by new media.

MacroLive
A program of talks, conferences, performances and events offering opportunities for learning and reflection with the participation of the artists themselves.
