Parkett Exhibition at Kanazawa Museum (Sep 4-26)

A 25 year retrospective of all 200 artworks made by artists for Parkett since 1984 opens at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, Japan, on September 4.

With a complete survey of all editions to date, the exhibition at the Kanazawa Museum provides a concise overview of developments in contemporary art over the last 25 years. “Commissioned by Parkett, the most important artists of our time have created editions that represent the essence of their art or reveal an unexpected dimension … the works cover every possible medium including painting, photographs, drawings, prints, sculptures, videos, DVDs, and sound pieces.” (The Whitechapel Art Gallery, London).

The Kanazawa exhibition space is transformed into 5 rooms: a Studio, a Playroom, a Wardrobe, a City and a Garden. The presentation ends with a Reading Room where viewers can browse in Parkett’s volumes and Inserts, the book page projects made by artists. Also on view are artists’ sketches, letters and other material documenting their direct collaboration with Parkett.

Catalogue Raisonné of all Parkett Artists’ Editions

A new catalogue raisonné entitled “200 ARTWORKS – 25 YEARS” is published on the occasion of this exhibition featuring full page color illustrations and detailed descriptions of all artworks.

In the essay “The Museum Plays House”, Susan Tallman, art historian and book author, traces the diversity and depth of these works, which represent distinct responses from many of the most influential artists worldwide.

Deborah Wye, Chief Curator, Department of Prints and Illustrated Books, at MoMA, looks at the various ways in which Parkett collaborates with artists, including the editions, inserts, spines, covers, texts, and the design of the publication. In her essay she remarks: “The MoMA collection contains numerous examples of editions by the most significant artists of the modern period … The editions made for Parkett carry on this rich tradition..”

In addition the catalogue contains color reproductions of 85 Parkett covers as well as artists’ sketches and letters on the making of Parkett and its editions. A complete index lists all authors and 1400 Parkett texts published in 25 years.
