The second edition of INDEPENDENT, the award winning temporary exhibition forum devised by and for gallerists will take place at the former DIA Center for the Arts and building at 548 W 22nd Street March 3-6, 2011 during New York Art Fair Week. INDEPENDENT will take place on the second, third and fourth floors of the building and will be open to the public free of charge, Thursday from 4 to 9 PM, Friday and Saturday from 11 AM to 8 PM, and Sunday from 12 to 4 PM. The layout of the exhibition is customized to reflect the spatial and curatorial concerns of each of over 40 international participants, who are presenting solo and group exhibitions as well as shared collaborative presentations. INDEPENDENT strives to reexamine traditional art fair models and methods of presentation, in response to the changing attitudes and growing challenges for artists, galleries, non-profits, curators and collectors as the experience of viewing and interacting with contemporary art in a group context. INDEPENDENT was conceived by Elizabeth Dee (Elizabeth Dee, New York and founder of X Initiative) and Darren Flook (Hotel, London). The 2011 edition of Independent was developed in conjunction with creative advisor Matthew Higgs (White Columns, New York) as well as co-directors Jayne Drost and Laura Mitterrand. 2011 INDEPENDENT Participants: Air de Paris, Paris Artists Space, New York The Approach, London Balice Hertling, Paris Bortolami Gallery, New York Gavin Brown’s enterprise, New York Bureau, New York China Art Objects, Los Angeles Elizabeth Dee, New York Feature Inc., New York Freymond Guth Ltd., Zurich gb agency, Paris Jack Hanley Gallery, New York Hard Hat, Geneva Harris Lieberman, New York Herald St, London Hotel, London ICI (Independent Curators International), New York Karma International, Zurich Galerie Ben Kaufmann, Berlin Anton Kern Gallery, New York Klosterfelde, Berlin Johann König, Berlin Andrew Kreps Gallery, New York Tanya Leighton, Berlin Wilfried Lentz, Rotterdam Gio Marconi, Milano Mary Mary, Glasgow Meyer Riegger, Berlin/Karlsruhe The Modern Institute, Glasgow Jan Mot, Brussels Neue Alte Brücke, Frankfurt New Galerie, Paris Maureen Paley, London Rodeo, Istanbul Stuart Shave/Modern Art, London Sprüth Magers, Berlin/London Studio Voltaire, London Sutton Lane, London/Paris Tulips & Roses, Brussels Wallspace, New York White Columns, New York Galerie Jocelyn Wolff, Paris Galerie Susanne Zander, Cologne + Thea Westreich/Ethan Wagner Publications + Three Star Books, New York/Paris For more information, please email at contact@independentnewyork.com.
