This issue opens with a new essay by Jeff Wall that proposes a historical account for the current diversity of approaches within contemporary art practice. The work discussed in subsequent pages ranges from Ulrike Ottinger’s filmic explorations of the tension between fiction and documentary to Yto Barrada’s and Christopher Williams’s work with photographic evidence and construction, as well as Gillian Carnegie’s reflections, through painting, on the possibilities of depiction. The discussion of these artists’ work is complemented by three essays on examples of artistic and curatorial practice, addressing the relationship between artforms and political critique. This issue marks the beginning of a new partnership with MuHKA, the Museum of Modern Art in Antwerp. Afterall now incorporates the quarterly visual culture journal AS, and curator and writer Dieter Roelstrate has joined as an editor. Afterall journal is co-published by Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design, London and the School of Arts at the California Institute of the Arts, Los Angeles.
