Sundays will feature a series of 16mm films by Luke Fowler selected by Christoph Cox. Governors Island has been a former military base, home to the US Army and Coast Guard for nearly two centuries. The island was closed in 1996 and most of the Dutch colonial buildings were left abandoned, including forts, mansions, scenic parkland and a community theater. As the story goes, in 2003 the federal government sold Governors Island to the people of New York for one dollar. This summer the island hosts numerous cultural programs including ‘The Sixth Borough’ curated by Julian Navarro and Manon Slome of No Longer Empty, which in addition to this film series, includes several site-specific installations and upcoming performances by Pablo Helguera, Marina Rosenfeld, and Daniel Bozhkov (consult the website for details on all programs). This is the last summer to enjoy cultural events on the island. The film program is inspired by the island’s odd position in time and space vis-à-vis Manhattan. The 172-acre island is only 800 yards from Manhattan, yet remains ever so remote. NOT A PLACE, AN OUTLOOK considers this island’s uncanny ability to short circuit our sense of time and space.
