Anthony McCall opens the “Formation of Presence: President’s Choice” series at the HBK.

The New York-based artist Anthony McCall (*1946) will exhibit his 2005 piece You and I, Horizontal from 24 April to 6 May 2012 at the gallery of the HBK Braunschweig. McCall has worked since the 1970s with exceptional light projections that combine sculptural, graphic, and filmic aspects. Light forms are projected in a dark fog-filled space and permanently change and interact with the viewer. Anthony McCall will hold a lecture and a presentation of his piece and working method on the occasion of the opening on 23 April 2012 at 7pm. The subsequent exhibition at the HBK is taking place parallel to a large-scale show of works by McCall at the Nationalgalerie Hamburger Bahnhof—Museum of Contemporary Art in Berlin from 20 April to 12 August 2012.

McCall’s lecture and exhibition constitute the start of the new “Formation of Presence: President’s Choice” series at the Braunschweig University of Art. Renowned guests from the arts, education, politics and economics will meet here in order to ponder and discuss the concept of the “present.” The present has been comprehended differently over time, as a state or as a transition. The formation of presence is animated by translations from the past into the future and by the question about what possibilities we have for the present,” says Prof. Dr Hubertus von Amelunxen, President of the HBK and initiator of the series.

As a general rule, the “Formation of Presence: President’s Choice” events will take place six times a year in the auditorium of the HBK Braunschweig. The second guest is the Chinese author, poet and musician Liao Yiwu. On 19 June 2012, at 7pm, he will read from his book For a Song and a Hundred Songs and give an improvised concert. This will be followed by a discussion with Frank Berberich, editor of Lettre International.

The series is being generously supported by Öffentliche Versicherung Braunschweig.
