The University of the Arts Bremen is a university of art and music with two faculties: Music and Art & Design. With its ideal medium size, interdisciplinary range of studies and excellent facilities, the HfK offers around 900 students the best conditions to prepare themselves for their personal artistic careers with about 65 professors, 200 lecturers and teachers as well as other artistic and academic junior researchers.
Music is made at the heart of Bremen’s historic city centre, just a stone’s throw from the town hall, statue of Roland and marketplace, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Centre. The Art & Design Faculty is located in a modernised warehouse in Bremen’s former docklands known as Überseestadt, which is now a centre for creative minds and business start-ups.
The insides of both listed buildings are in tune with the times. Fully equipped workshops and highly professional recording and editing studios containing the latest technical equipment are available for students to use as well as practice rooms and exhibition space—from rustic jazz cellars to artists’ studios flooded with light.
Great emphasis is put on practical experience at the University of the Arts Bremen: both musical and artistic—creative artists of the future contribute to the cultural offerings of the Hanseatic City in numerous exhibitions and concerts throughout Bremen. Frequent prizes awarded to students and lecturers at the University of the Arts Bremen testify to the repeatedly high quality of the artistic further education.
The University of the Arts Bremen is looking to fill the post of Rector at the earliest possible opportunity.
The University of the Arts Bremen offers a diverse and acknowledged range of teaching and study, research, art practice and artistic development projects within the disciplines of fine arts, design, music and art-related sciences. As a lively part of the public art scene, the University of the Arts Bremen’s influence reaches far beyond the region and holds a special position in the world of German art schools and conservatories.
A person can be elected to the post of Rector by the Academic Senate of the University if he or she has a university degree and can be expected to be equal to the tasks of the office on the basis of several years’ experience in a position of professional responsibility, especially in art, music, culture, science, economics, administration, or the administration of justice. The rector represents the University externally and is a member of the rector’s office, which is the executive committee additionally comprising from one to three deputy rectors and the chancellor. The particulars are determined by the Bremen Higher Education Act and the constitution of the university of the Arts Bremen.
We are looking for someone with communicative and integrative leadership qualities who is capable of making a considerable contribution to the development of the University of the Arts Bremen internally and externally through committed and competent actions. Skilful handling of the instruments of university planning and development in a joint university of the arts will be expected along with commitment to university policies in an institute within the tertiary education sector that has a particularly artistic and but also academic outlook. At the same time, confident handling of the various artistic and academic cultures in view of the disciplines that already exist at the University of the Arts Bremen and those that require development, including international and interdisciplinary projects, are of great importance.
The tenure is five years; re-election is possible. The appointment will be made as a civil servant or salaried employee for the entire term of office in accordance with the salary bracket W 3, plus a position-related bonus pursuant to Section 5 of the Bremen regulation on performance bonuses at universities (BremHLBV).
