The Low-Residency Master of Fine Arts (Low-Res MFA) program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) is designed for the 21st century artist whose work and life demand both a rigorous engagement with an artistic community as well as flexibility, fluidity, and a self-directed approach. SAIC’s Low-Res MFA program is open to artists, writers, educators, curators, and historians.

Supported by faculty based at SAIC and a roster of renowned visiting artists, students spend spring and fall semesters taking classes online and working remotely from a home studio, paired with a local SAIC program mentor. Three consecutive summer residencies at SAIC bring students together to create, construct, and critique work during six-week intensives structured through both studio- and classroom-based courses and symposia. Studio work builds toward a major thesis project with both exhibited and written components.

Low-Residency MFA thesis show
July 12–29 / Reception: Thursday, July 12, 6–8pm
This exhibition, along with readings, screenings, and performances, will showcase the culminating achievements of our graduating students working in a multitude of mediums and methodologies.

Low-Residency MFA open studio night
Friday, July 27, 5–9pm
Graduate studios across campus
We invite you to join us for open studio night for SAIC’s Low-Residency MFA program. On July 27, studios across campus will be open to engage the community and celebrate another enriching summer.
