CIMAM’s Annual Conference is currently the most important forum for communication, co-operation and information exchange between museums, professionals, visual arts workers and artists within modern and contemporary art practice. Its guiding principle is the presentation of new unpublished work followed by free discussion and visits to the foremost contemporary art institutions, collections and projects in the region. Around 200 delegates are expected to attend CIMAM 2014 Annual Conference in Doha, Qatar. Three keynote speakers and ten case study presentations will be conforming the basis of a larger debate that will take place among the conference delegates. The active implication of members and delegates will be requested through extended Q&A, panel discussions and visits to contemporary art institutions in the city to reflect upon the issues arising from the conference topics.

Modern and contemporary art museums have been built as institutional tools that share knowledge and education with society. They have become essential parts of both local and national socioeconomic frameworks. Addressing the recent past and present, these museums play a central role in constructing the myths of our times and the writing of local histories while becoming platforms of transcultural international exchanges with worldwide impact.
The global scale of technological, economic, social, and political transformations profoundly affect the mission and operation of these museums. CIMAM’s 2014 Annual Conference raises discussions and focused studies about the effects of these changes in the institutional environment and seeks to develop an argument for museums to adapt their original missions in line with these new institutional ethics, challenges, and realities.
Travel grant program
CIMAM offers grants to support the attendance of modern and contemporary art curators and museum or collection directors to CIMAM’s 2014 Annual Conference.
The Getty Foundation, Los Angeles supports 15 travel grants to contemporary art museum and collection curators and directors residing in countries with Emerging Market and Developing Economies according to the International Monetary Fund’s World Economic Outlook.
The Fundación Cisneros/Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros offers four travel grants to contemporary art museum and collection curators and directors residing in Latin America with priority to Central America and the Caribbean.
Deadline to submit applications is 30 June, 24:00 (GMT+1).

Qatar Museums will offer additional grants for curators and professionals from the GCC, Africa, Brazil, and the Middle East. Information to be published on CIMAM’s website accordingly.
General registration and program including details of the post-conference tour in Sharjah, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi will be announced on CIMAM’s website by 30 June.
The 2014 CIMAM Annual Conference is hosted and co-organised by Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art. Mathaf is a Qatar Museums organization led by Chairperson H.E. Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al Thani and supported by Qatar Foundation, led by Chairperson H.H Sheikha Moza bint Nasser. Mathaf is founded by the Vice Chairperson of Qatar Museums, H.E Sheikh Hassan bin Mohammed bin Ali Al Thani.
