Seeking new Director
Institute of Modern Art
420 Brunswick Street
Fortitude Valley
Brisbane QLD 4006
Australia
Deadline for applications:
Monday 15 July 2013
The Institute of Modern Art Board is seeking a new and innovative Director to creatively lead the organization through its next phase of development.
Founded in 1975, the IMA is a highly respected Australian contemporary art space and the hub of contemporary-art life in Brisbane and the state of Queensland. In recent years we have staged exhibitions by artists including Taryn Simon, Cao Fei, Artur Zmijewski, Olaf Breuning, Diana Thater, Yang Fudong, and Gregory Crewdson. We also have a long history of producing important exhibitions and publications.
The Director reports to the Board, which is elected annually by members. In turn, the Board is accountable to the principal funding bodies: Arts Queensland (Queensland state government) and the Australia Council (federal government).
The Director is CEO and is responsible for all activities, artistically and operationally, requiring both artistic and administrative expertise. While there is an expectation from the board and from our funders that the program will encompass emerging and established artists, and local, national, and international artists, the Director has considerable autonomy in directing and shaping their program of exhibitions, publications, and events.
Currently, the IMA produces about twelve exhibitions per year, in six two-month seasons. Many of these are developed as joint ventures; many tour. The IMA also currently publishes three to four books a year, as well as smaller exhibition-based publications.
Facilities: There are four galleries and a screening room, totaling more than 600 square meters, plus offices, storage, workshop, and access to residential studios. Our galleries are museum-quality, climate controlled. This enables us to borrow works from, and engage in joint projects with, art museums.
Apart from the Director, staffing includes a range of full-time and part-time positions, with varying responsibilities, such as a General Manager, an exhibitions officer, a bookkeeper, a communications officer, an editorial assistant, and a designer. In addition, we employ contract staff for installation, bar, etc. We have a large volunteer base.
The Scene: Brisbane is a rapidly growing city. With the opening of Queensland Art Gallery’s Gallery of Modern Art in 2006, it has become one of Australia’s key art cities. There are also two art schools (Queensland College of Art, Griffith University; and Visual Arts, QUT) as well as an art history department (University of Queensland). Sydney and Melbourne are easily accessible.
