The Department of Art & Design at Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers–New Brunswick invites applications for the MFA in Design, an innovative program that situates a studio design practice within the context of university-wide research in the arts, sciences, humanities, and social sciences.

The Rutgers MFA in Design values experimentation, criticality, and collaboration. The two-year, full-time course of study emphasizes research-driven work, empowering designers to identify, question, and synthesize quantitative and qualitative material to underpin their creative projects. Design becomes a tool for inquiry and investigation alongside communication and expression. The curriculum interweaves studio work, design history and theory, and opportunities for collaboration with scholars in a wide range of fields at Rutgers University. This studio program is suited for designers, artists, and interdisciplinary practitioners who seek an environment to pursue studio practice and realize creative ideas that address real-world issues.

Prospective MFA in Design students are invited to attend the department's MFA open studios on November 6, 1–6pm, as well as a dedicated information session about the MFA in Design the same day, 2–2:45pm. Faculty and currents students will describe the program’s mission, curriculum, and opportunities and will provide a facilities tour. Please register here. An additional info session will take place virtually on November 9 at 6pm ET. Please register here
