The Hunter College MFA in Studio Art is pleased to announce the appointment of Lisa Corinne Davis and Carrie Moyer as co-directors of Hunter College’s nationally ranked graduate studio program. Both internationally recognized painters, Professors Davis and Moyer are also published writers on art and culture, occasional curators, and fully and critically engaged participants in the current art scene and its histories. They invite applications to the MFA program for the fall semester 2022.

Lisa Corinne Davis received her BFA from Pratt and an MFA from Hunter; she taught at Yale in the School of Art before returning to Hunter as a member of the faculty in 2002. Her painting practice explores the complex relationships between race, culture, and history and, with it, ideas about classification and contingency, the rational and irrational, chaos and order. Her paintings have been exhibited across the United States and Europe, and she is represented by Jenkins Johnson Gallery in San Francisco and New York, and the Mayor Gallery in London. Professor Davis has been the recipient of numerous awards, including The Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Grant, a National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artist Fellowship, three Artist Fellowships from The New York Foundation for the Arts, and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. In 2017, she was inducted as a National Academician at the National Academy of Design Museum and School.

A member of Hunter’s studio faculty since 2011, Carrie Moyer received her BFA from Pratt and holds an MFA from Bard College. She has exhibited in the U.S. and Europe for over two decades, and her work has been the subject of solo museum exhibitions at the Tang Museum of Skidmore College, the Worcester Museum of Art, and, with Sheila Pepe, at the Portland Museum of Art in Maine and the Museum of Art and Design, New York. Moyer’s paintings engage multiple histories of painting, layering abstract aesthetics with legible imagery and stylistic references to Surrealism, formalist modernism, period counterculture graphics, and 1970s feminist art. Her work is now the subject of a just released monograph from Rizzoli Electa, edited by Lauren O’Neill-Butler. Represented by the D.C. Moore Gallery, New York, Professor Moyer has been the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, and grants from the Joan Mitchell Foundation and Anonymous Was a Woman.

The Hunter College MFA in Studio Art is an affordable three-year program designed to offer artists broad opportunities to develop their work in an environment that encourages experimentation, production, and critical dialogue. MFA students work with Hunter’s exceptional full-time faculty in individual tutorials, small seminars focused on group critique and contemporary practice, and classes in the theory, criticism and history of art. Each semester, students meet with a full calendar of visiting artists, curators, and critics. Students also have the opportunity to work closely with faculty and curatorial staff on the development of public exhibitions at Hunter College’s four different galleries.

Located at the corner of Hudson and Canal Streets in Tribeca, the Hunter MFA program offers students extraordinary access to cultural riches and resources of New York City. Immersion in the art world is crucial to our educational goal: the development of professional artists capable of continued creative and intellectual innovation far beyond the confines of the graduate school environment.

Application deadline for Hunter’s MFA in Studio Art for the Fall Semester 2022 is January 15, 2022.  For details on how to apply and links to the application and other important information, visit here.
