Aalto University’s Department of Art and Media welcomes applications for the MA Programme in Art and Media; and for the Nordic Master Programme in Visual Studies and Art Education. The department or Art and Media was formed in 2022 as a merger of two departments, which have both been recognized internationally for high-quality artistic and research outputs, media productions and art pedagogical activities. Applications close on January 2, 2023 (3pm GMT+2).
MA in Art and Media
The Master’s Programme in Art and Media is comprised of seven majors. To apply to the MA in Art and Media, please apply directly to one of the majors:
Art Education: Bachelor’s & master’s programmes (taught in Finnish). Two paths to a master’s degree. A student who has completed a bachelor’s degree in visual arts education as a major can continue directly to the master’s program. Alternatively, you can apply for separate master’s studies if you have completed art or education studies elsewhere that make you eligible to apply. Apply here.
Game Design and Development: The major offers a unique mix of technical and artistic aspects of game development. The major produces visionary, out-of-the-box thinkers who have the ambition to push the boundaries in the world of game design. Apply here.
New Media: By exploring the field of new media through new media art and culture, interaction design, creative computing, and interactive narratives, graduates will have unique competences to take on new and emerging professions within the broad spectrum of the new media industry. Apply here.
Photography: This major offers diverse and inspiring studies in the fields of contemporary photography and artistic research. The studies place emphasis on photography as an independent and multidisciplinary expressive tool and seek to develop students’ artistic and research-oriented thinking. Apply here.
Visual Communication Design: The Visual Communication Design (VCD) major is committed to investigating new modes of agency within visual communication. As a critical response to contemporary conditions, the studies enable you to reconsider the established notions of graphic design. By bridging theory and practice, the curriculum supports you in redefining your design practice and situating it within wider societal and environmental frameworks. Apply here.
The next round of applications for the majors Sound in New Media and Visual Cultures, Curating and Contemporary Art (ViCCA) is planned to begin at the end of 2023 for students who wish to begin their postgraduate studies in August/September 2024.
Nordic Master in Visual Studies and Art Education
The Nordic Master in Visual Studies and Art Education (NM NoVA) is a double degree programme between Aalto University (Finland) and Aalborg University (Denmark) in which students achieve a comprehensive understanding of Nordic practices and traditions in art education, visual culture, and cultural work. NM NoVA offers a mix of problem-based and student-centered, hands-on experience with theoretical and practical studies in art, education, digital communication, and project management. The program includes mandatory mobility during the second year of the studies. Students who start their studies at Aalto will finish them at Aalborg, and vice versa. Apply here.
