Applications are open to be part of the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design. A university that unites art, theory and design to reshape freedom.

The Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG) is accepting applications for the winter semester 2023/24 from March 1 to April 30, 2023. In a time of global transition, the HfG Karlsruhe unites art, critical theory and design, offering paths to rethink and redesign present and future freedoms. At the HfG Karlsruhe, the community exchanges one-dimensional standpoints for more inclusive perspectives; uses objects and technology as tools for reflection and research; and understands freedom as something that is not given, but made through self-reflecting, self-organising, and reappropriating our media.

The HfG Karlsruhe is a design school that does not aim to produce more of the same solutions, but to question the function and implications of design for producers and consumers. Graduating students become active citizens and masters in being comfortable with doubt and critique, debating, provoking and conflicting ideas. The HfG Karlsruhe is always in exchange with national and international partners and is part of numerous cooperations, networks and interdisciplinary projects, among others with its neighbor, the ZKM / Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe.

Applications to join the HfG Karlsruhe’s community in the upcoming winter semester 2023/2024 are open through April 30, 2023. Please apply online here.

More about studying at the HfG Karlsruhe
A unique combination of artistic, design and theoretical subjects makes studying at the HfG Karlsruhe especially varied and exciting for professional careers in the future. With Communication DesignProduct DesignMedia ArtExhibition Design and Scenography, as well as Art Research and Media Philosophy, the university presents itself as an interdisciplinary and future-oriented art academy of a particular type that has increasingly developed since the early 1990s in Europe, the United States, and Japan.

Common to all courses is the interdisciplinary project work practiced from the beginning, allowing for an ideal combination of theory and practical experience that reflects the teaching concept of the university. The cooperation with the neighboring ZKM / Center for Art and Media underlines the interdisciplinary focus of the school. Internationally renowned professors and artists ensure excellent teaching while maintaining its international profile. Well-equipped studios and workshops guarantee a highly innovative environment for the nurture of experimentation.

Hosted in the striking spaces of a former ammunition factory, the university offers its circa 400 students not only excellent studying conditions, but it also still offers Diplom or Magister degrees—one of the few in Germany to still do so. The HfG Karlsruhe was inaugurated on April 15, 1992, and founded by Professor Dr. Heinrich Klotz between the years 1989 to 1992, together with the ZKM | Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe. This allowed for a unique combination of teaching-, research-, and exhibition-institutions taking into account the new artistic and pedagogic task of bringing together arts, media and electronic production processes.
