The University of Applied Arts Vienna and the Johannes Kepler University Linz are jointly creating the “Art x Science School for Transformation” (pronounced “Art cross Science School for Transformation”). With the new Transformation Studies Art x Science study programmes, two universities are combining art and science.
The climate crisis, digitalisation, and social change processes are omnipresent, directly impacting our everyday lives. If we are to continue to not only effectively respond to these new times and conditions but also positively shape change, we need the right tools and skill set, along with a new understanding and more expertise.
Imagination, visionary thinking, creativity, and passion for experimental approaches
The Art x Science School for Transformation combines the strengths and competencies of both universities in its study programs. Its objective is to tackle the urgent questions of our time and to shape interdisciplinary teaching and research. It creates a new space for synergies in order to tackle the challenges of tomorrow.
The new Transformation Studies Art x Science study programmes
In the future, students at two universities will be able to study a new combination of artistic and scientific approaches, methods and strategies to understand and analyze current transformations (such as climate change, digitalization, etc.) and to work on creating possible solutions.
Shaping transformation
In addition to profound specific expert and broad contextual knowledge from art and science, the training of creative, social and communicative skills is central to the course.
The study programme combines:
–Theoretical as well as practical knowledge and methods
–Courses from disciplines and subject areas such as artificial intelligence, media theory and aesthetics, social entrepreneurship, robotics, artistic and creative strategies, social and economic sciences or innovation law.
Using creativity, its transformative power, how to think “outside of the box”, and a cross-disciplinary approach, students develop new ideas and approaches to problem-solving. A special focus is placed on teaching skills in the area of personal development.
New teaching formats
Innovative teaching formats (face-to-face and online), as well as project-oriented learning from the first semester onwards, characterise the degree programme, as well as the freedom to set your own thematic focus.
Two universities, two study locations
Teaching takes place in Vienna and Linz and benefits from the different learning spaces and workshops at both universities.
Career prospects
The degree programme qualifies students to work in complex transformative projects and processes. It prepares students to take on roles such as initiator, facilitator, coordinator, moderator, mediator or facilitator in an interdisciplinary team. Graduates are qualified to work in different areas (public institutions, the academic sector, the private sector…) and to accompany, design and implement projects with different participants / stakeholders.
