MICA Grad Show 2025 features the work of the College’s graduating MFA and MA students across 14 internationally renowned graduate programs. From February through July, several exhibitions and events will highlight a range of student work. In collaboration with the Office of Graduate Studies, the programs will host exhibition receptions and key events celebrating the ability of these students to harness art’s power to disrupt, awaken, and inspire. MICA’s graduate student work often touches on the social and political fabric that weaves our world together. Daniel Katz-Hernandez, a student in MICA’s Mount Royal School of Art (Multidisciplinary MFA), is a talented multimedia artist who employs a vibrant and metaphorical visual language to explore the lived experiences of the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community, translating the seen, the felt, and the unspoken into form. As an MFA student in the Rinehart School of Sculpture, Rida Yawar’s work is shaped by a post-colonial, third-world perspective. In a recent exhibition, she used Himalayan pink salt to metaphorically represent the instability of political and social systems, due to the inherent paradox of its material nature. Some MICA graduate students utilize the community and resources offered at MICA to connect them to fellowships and other paid opportunities to help advance and develop their work. Lisa Brown from the socially-focused Community Arts, MFA program has secured at least two fellowships in her time with MICA. She is currently a France-Merrick Fellow and was selected as an Internship Fellow for a residency in Ghana for the summer of 2024. In her thesis “Book of Stories”, which focuses on the unfair treatment of women in Baltimore prisons, she utilizes physical artifacts like prison bed sheets.
For Isaac Kim, an MFA student in the LeRoy E. Hoffberger School of Painting, the MICA community encouraged the development of an arts collective—“Flying House” Arts Collective (FHAC). FHAC is a Baltimore-based group focused on building community developed with MICA students and alumni (LeRoy E. Hoffberger cohort and alumni Valentino Orlando ‘25, Kelly Liu ‘25, Tim Moran ‘24 and Curatorial Practice, MFA student Rui Jiang ‘25). The group secured funding through JUST/Start offered through MICA’s Ratcliffe Center for Creative Entrepreneurship (RCCE). Finally, Krittika Mittal brings intimate moments to life through her work. She captures the beauty of fleeting emotions and experiences, creating immersive spaces that provide personal connection. She is a keen example of Illustration Practice, MFA’s commitment to preparing illustrators for the job market, having recently collaborated with Michael Kors Mumbai for a live portrait drawing session.
MICA’s rigorous graduate programs have a major impact on the development of student work which is ultimately unveiled during MICA Grad Show. This series of exhibitions and events gives students the opportunity to display their diverse work and connect with an audience outside of MICA’s walls.
