A new addition to IED Firenze's academic offering with the launch of the Master of Arts in Interior and Furniture Design—Hacking Tradition: Reinventing Craftsmanship and Materials.

A new milestone has been added to the academic offering of IED—Istituto Europeo di Design in Florence with the launch of the new Master of Arts in Interior and Furniture Design—Hacking Tradition: Reinventing Craftsmanship and Materials. The program is designed to redefine the relationship between tradition and innovation in design, bridging craftsmanship and sustainability.

Interior and Furniture Design—Hacking Tradition: Reinventing Craftsmanship and Materials
Aligning with the sustainable textile design path of the two-year program in Textile Design, the new Interior and Furniture Design course aims to teach future designers how to interpret and rework cultural and material heritage with a critical and sustainable approach.

Design is thus seen not only as a creative act but also as a transformative process that shapes the material environment while considering social, political, economic, cultural, and ecological interconnections.

A new way of designing: awareness, territory, and innovation
The Master of Arts in Interior and Furniture Design—Hacking Tradition: Reinventing Craftsmanship and Materials at IED Firenze aims to train professionals capable of “hacking” traditional knowledge, reinterpreting artisanal skills, and finding new applications for local material and natural resources.

The course fosters a dialogue between innovation and tradition, between local and global perspectives, fitting into the vision of DesignXCommons, an ecological design approach that integrates and regenerates common goods, contributing to environmental and social sustainability.

The new IED Master of Arts program and Tuscany’s Artisan Districts
The study program combines theory and practice, allowing students to work directly with Tuscany’s renowned manufacturing sector—globally recognized for its excellence in marble, textiles, furniture, jewelry, and leather craftsmanship.

Through field projects, workshops, company visits, and real case studies, students will learn to transform the social, economic, and cultural context into a key element of their design process.

Textile Design: The Existing Master of Arts Focused on Sustainability
Alongside the Master of Arts in Textile Design, Eco-Threads: Materials and Circularity—which addresses the challenges of textile design through the use of sustainable materials and innovative technologies across fashion, product, and interior design (with a focus on material research, eco-design, and process innovation)—IED Firenze confirms itself as a reference point in the design field, with an innovative and sustainable vision. Florence is an open-air museum, where history and creativity blend seamlessly. Home to renowned landmarks like Ponte Vecchio, Piazza Duomo, and the Uffizi Gallery, the city also thrives as a global fashion capital, birthplace of luxury brands like Gucci and Ferragamo.

IED Firenze, located in a historic architectural masterpiece, fosters a dynamic connection with its surroundings, integrating tradition and innovation in design, fashion, and the arts. With its strategic position and deep ties to craftsmanship, the school offers students a unique environment to develop their creative and professional potential.
