M+ Facade
M+, Asia’s first global museum of contemporary visual culture in Hong Kong, is pleased to present HK:PM, a new moving image commission by world-renowned photographer Greg Girard. The work will be displayed on the M+ Facade at night from Friday, July 4 to Sunday, September 28, 2025.
Greg Girard’s HK:PM is a visual journey through Hong Kong’s vibrant city life. The work animates analogue photographs from the artist’s personal collection, shot between the 1970s and 1990s. Girard’s images unfold like a film: bustling street scenes in Central—schoolgirls, fashionistas, and office and street workers going about their daily lives—alternate with images from the Kowloon Walled City. Neon-lit streets, lively nightclubs, and magical moments with the city’s most beloved film stars come to life. There is a sense of perpetual motion, from airplanes soaring between dense skyscrapers around Kai Tak Airport to the incessant activities along Victoria Harbour.
HK:PM returns Girard’s photographs to their place of their creation. Presented in this new format, incidental situations become lasting images, and their sequence becomes a film. As a keen-eyed urban explorer, Girard shows us how intimate moments and personal memories together shape a collective history, connecting the past with the present.
M+ Cinema
This summer, our Stair in the Dark series continues its celebration of cult classics, this time paying tribute to beloved actor Keanu Reeves. One of the most enduring stars with an unorthodox career marked by dramatic highs and lows, Reeves’s eclectic back catalogue spans roles as a rom-com heartthrob, a Shakespearean villain, a DC antihero, and even the Buddha. Our playful tribute to Reeves includes screenings of classic films such as The Matrix (1999), Point Break (1991), and Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989). A free one-off screening of Johnny Mnemonic: In Black and White (1995/2021) in the M+ Cinema, rounds out this entertaining summer spotlight.
M+ Cinema also welcomes the return of the ASEAN Film Festival. Highlights include a special cine-concert performance of Garin Nugroho’s Samsara (2024), accompanied by live music from Kasimyn of Gabber Modus Operandi and I Wayan Sudirana. Embodied Reconfigurations: Films by Pom Bunsermvicha spotlights the young Thai filmmaker with The Nature of Dogs (2024), Lemongrass Girl (2021), and E-po (A Second Chance) (2018). Daughter, Wife, Mother, Woman: Short Films from Southeast Asia, presents a curated selection of recent short films spotlighting powerful, female-driven narratives from across the region, celebrating the diverse and compelling voices shaping contemporary Southeast Asian cinema.
In a continuing effort to project films in their original formats, M+ Cinema will also offer a Special Screening of Miike Takashi’s hybrid musical-comedy-horror The Happiness of the Katakuris (2001), presented in a rare 35mm print.
Avant-Garde Now: Time Travellers brings together four contemporary artists—Monira Al Qadiri, Cao Fei, Meiro Koizumi, and Subash Thebe Limbu—to present a dynamic mix of screenings, interactive virtual reality experiences, and talks. Through speculative and futuristic narratives, these artists challenge and expand perceptions of time, blending science fiction, mythology, and culture to imagine possible futures while reflecting on the present.
