Su Yu Hsin: Particular Waters

Following Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) from its headquarters in Hsinchu, Taiwan, to its expanding operations in Phoenix, Arizona, and Dresden, Germany, Su Yu Hsin’s research-based Particular Waters trilogy traces the entanglement between the global semiconductor supply chain and water infrastructures. Approaching computing and AI infrastructure from the material perspective of water and silicon, the films examine the resource consumption involved in chip manufacturing and its environmental consequences. Join us for a screening of the trilogy introduced by Candice Strongwater and followed by a conversation between Su Yu Hsin and critic Dawn Chan. Read more here.

Pandrogeny Manifesto with Roxy Farman and Jarrett Earnest

Join us at e-flux for an event honoring pioneering artist and musician Genesis Breyer P-Orridge (1950–2020) and h/er collaborator and partner Lady Jaye Breyer P-Orridge (1969–2007) with a screening of The Pandrogeny Manifesto (Directed by Dionysos Andronis and Aldo Lee, 2006) followed by a performance by musician Roxy Farman and a talk by curator Jarrett Earnest. The Pandrogeny Manifesto introduces us to Breyer P-Orridge’s decade-long Pandrogeny project, which is a testament to love, a way of life and an artwork at once. Inspired by William S. Burroughs’ and Brion Gysin’s cut-up technique, Genesis and Lady Jaye take us through an adventure of plastic surgery, dress and shamanistic rituals, reimagining the human body with one goal in mind: to become one. After the screening, Roxy Farman, a former collaborator and friend of Breyer P-Orridge, will present an audio-visual performance that draws on the cut-up collaging technique central to Breyer P-Orridge’s practice. The evening will conclude with a talk by Jarrett Earnest who will discuss a previously hidden conceptual artwork that Genesis created in 1977 in the form of an encyclopedia of contemporary artists, considering it in relation to h/er later collaboration with Lady Jaye and the development of pandrogyny. Andrei Ujică: Images in the World, Images in the Mind

Join us at e-flux for an evening with the acclaimed Romanian filmmaker, artist, and writer Andrei Ujică featuring excerpts from Ujică's Videograms of a Revolution (1992, co-directed with Harun Farocki), The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceaușescu (2010), and TWST / Things We Said Today (2024). In each film, the tension between recorded images and those formed through memory gives a different inflection to the relation between aesthetics and politics. The conversation will follow this tension across Ujică's works, with particular attention to the camera’s role in historical events, montage as a form of counter-historical narration, and the limits and potentials of the filmic art, now that moving images are ubiquitous. Following the screening, an extended conversation moderated by Lukas Brasiskis will focus on Ujică's works and his wider thinking on cinema, art, and society. This event is organized in partnership with the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York and curated by Andreea Drăghicescu. Read more here.

Bar Laika presents Playback 0037 with Midgar Records
Join us at Bar Laika for the thirty-seventh edition of Playback with Midgar Records founder Severja. Severja is less interested in genres than in the strange gravitational pull between them. In his sets, sounds that might seem unrelated on paper are allowed to circle one another until their differences begin to blur: low-slung rhythms and weightless atmospheres, soundsystem pressure and psychedelic detail, skeletal drums, submerged melodies, synthetic organisms flickering at the edge of perception. There is a sense of constant mutation. Rhythms collide and dissolve, familiar forms arrive slightly warped, and unexpected juxtapositions reveal affinities between records that seemingly have little business sharing the same space. Rather than smoothing over those differences, Severja plays with the friction between them, letting one musical language contaminate the next. The result is less a journey through genres than a temporary ecosystem with its own internal logic. Read more here.

Rehearsal Behavior. I: Chantal Akerman and Shirley Clarke

Join us at e-flux for a screening of Chantal Akerman’s One Day Pina Asked… (1983), preceded by Shirley Clarke’s A Moment in Love (1956). A collaboration between director Shirley Clarke and choreographer Anna Sokolow, A Moment in Love portrays a couple, performers Carmela Gutierrez and Paul Sanasardo, dancing together across lush outdoor landscapes. Clarke’s filmic experimentation animates the piece as she syncs the dancers’ performances to the natural motion of their surroundings. Originally commissioned for French television, in One Day Pina Asked… Akerman follows the then-rising German choreographer Pina Bausch and her Tanztheater Wuppertal on a five-week tour through Milan, Venice, and Avignon in the summer of 1983. This event is the first part of Rehearsal Behavior, a screening series tracing a capacious lineage of choreographic moving-image works guest-curated by Andrea Torres and Charlotte Strange. Read more here.

Rehearsal Behavior. II: Yvonne Rainer

Join us at e-flux for a screening of Yvonne Rainer’s Lives of Performers (1972). The film will be followed by an in-person conversation with Rainer, moderated by writer David Velasco.  Rainer's pas de trois: a man is torn between two women. Through this archetypal conceit, Rainer questions how power surfaces and shifts in a relationship, then radically fractures narrative conventions by incorporating changing performers, austere collages of rehearsal footage, still photography, staged tableaux, and scattered spoken and on-screen text throughout the film. Recurring intertitles bookend sequences, drawing from sources including Leo Bersani's writing on cliché and Jung’s on desire, an extension of Rainer’s longtime engagement with early feminist, queer, and psychoanalytic theory. These self-reflexive devices keep the film's relationship to its own material unsettled, never quite letting the audience rest in immediacy or in critical distance. This event is the second part of “Rehearsal Behavior,” a screening series tracing a capacious lineage of choreographic moving-image works guest-curated by Andrea Torres and Charlotte Strange. We are delighted to welcome Re'al Christian, Ben Davis, Keller Easterling, Liam Gillick, and Hindley Wang. They will each expand upon their contributions to issue 9 of the Index, covering quandaries from the capacity of technology to record various histories of collapse, the jeopardized role of art writing, the possibility of a disposition of architecture theory, the relationship between theory and class struggle, and the psychoanalytic preoccupation with childhood and its traumas. Planetary Afterimages: After The Short Century

An afterimage lingers—an imprint of vision that persists after the source has faded. It can be a physiological residue, or a heightened, hallucinatory palinopsia: a repetition that refuses closure. This convening takes the afterimage as its conceptual node: how do the images, films, and archival traces of “The Short Century” continue to circulate, resonate, and insist upon being re-seen? What specters, echoes, and reflections emerge when these works reappear across new temporalities and contexts? Join us at e-flux for “Planetary Afterimages: After The Short Century,” a two-part event beginning at 5pm with a session reflecting on the zine produced for this convening. At 7pm, contextual remarks will introduce a screening of John Akomfrah’s Testament (1988), which will be followed by a conversation between Yusuf Hassan, Keli Safia Maksud, and Serubiri Moses.
