Leap of Faith. I. The World Becomes a Sign
Get tickets
Screening featuring Ana Vaz, Há terra! (There is Land!) (2016) and Maya Da-Rin, Fever (2019). In these films, an encounter with the unknown has yet to be given meaning: the boundary between landscape and imagination becomes uncertain, a fever arrives without a clear cause. The leap of faith here lies in trusting signs in the land or in the body as traces of Brazil’s histories of Indigenous dispossession still acting on the present. The question is less whether these signs can be explained than what happens when people begin to read the world differently. The first part of our outdoor summer screening series Leap of Faith. Bar Laika presents Playback 0034
Join us for the thirty-fourth edition of Playback with Lesley Mok. Mok is a New York City-based percussionist and sound artist. Their work is guided by a continual search for the connection between the mundane and the divine, the experience and manipulation of time, and a desire to capture emotional dissonance and complexity. Lesley is inspired by American experimental music as informed by the lineage of the AACM, sounds and textures from the natural environment, Afro-Cuban folkloric traditions, drumline, and songwriters and composers like Arthur Russell and Ryuichi Sakamoto. Leap of Faith. II. The Absolute Demand
Get tickets
Screening featuring Jonathas de Andrade, Sisters Without a Name (2025) and Luc Dardenne and Jean-Pierre Dardenne, La promesse (1996). Both films center on a call to unconditional action in the face of injustice. In one, women remake their religious lives around a commitment to social justice. In the other, a promise made to a dying man forces a teenager into conflict with his father. In each case, a single decision creates moral obligations whose consequences cannot be controlled or foreseen. The second part of our outdoor summer screening series Leap of Faith. Read more here.

Leap of Faith. III. The Unfinished Passage
Get tickets
Screening featuring Lois Patiño, The Sower of Stars (2022) and Trương Minh Quý, Viet and Nam (2024). Death does not bring closure in these films. The dead remain present in landscapes and in everyday life, where the living and the deceased continue to shape one another's existence. To go on living in the presence of the dead requires openness to a world larger than what it appears to be. The third part of our outdoor summer screening series Leap of Faith. Read more here.

Leap of Faith. IV. Afterlife in Images
Get tickets
Screening featuring Coleman Collins, Specular Fiction (2024) and Hirokazu Kore-eda, After Life (1998). What happens after we die? These films approach the question through technologies of recording and simulation. Memories are recreated and projected onto a screen; digital replicas outlive the objects they once represented. The wager here is whether an image still holds something of a life once the body and the world around it have disappeared. The final part of our outdoor summer screening series Leap of Faith. Read more here.
