CHAOS & ORDER

Demanio Marittimo.KM-278 is a marathon dedicated to architecture, art, design, and the Adriatic dimension, curated by Cristiana Colli and Pippo Ciorra. As every year, the 16th edition happens on Marzocca public beach (Senigallia) on Friday, July 17, running non-stop from 6pm to 6am.

The theme of this edition is CHAOS & ORDER. The convergence of wars, political turbulence, social inequality, and climate change is having devastating effects on people, migrations, and cities. It also impacts the worlds of art, architecture, and spatial and performative practices. The 16th edition of the marathon focuses on the changes produced by this new condition across these disciplines and within the dense interdisciplinary field that connects them. To discuss this new condition, Demanio will present talks, installations, lectures, and performances addressing many of the issues that animate—and concern—the broad ecosystem of ideas developing in the search for new models of cohabitation and citizenship.

In the scenography designed by students from the School of Architecture in Sarajevo, Hana Gjocaj and Dženana Strašević, the evening opens with a conversation on contemporary geopolitics featuring geopolitical analyst Dario Fabbri, historian Luka Skansi, and photographer Iwan Baan.

Poetry—a life-saving reaction to brutality—will be one of the main focuses of the marathon, with a tribute to Umberto Piersanti, a Nobel Prize nominee in 2005 and 2024, chaired by Massimo Gezzi. The 100th anniversary of Rainer Maria Rilke's death, marking the legacy of a poet who inspired generations of Italian artists, will be commemorated with Massimo Raffaeli, Andrea Bruciati, Marco Federici Solari, Lorenzo Pavolini. As a counterweight to this, another centenary, diversely poetic, will be the subject on a conversation about Marylin Monroe, her relation to body and cloths.

Architecture, along with the many spatial disciplines, is being profoundly affected by today's geopolitical turbulence. Demanio will address this through a number of panels. The first is inspired by the recent discovery of the remains of Vitruvius's basilica in Fano, just a few miles away. The significance and implications of this archaeological discovery will be discussed by Francesco Benelli with Maddalena Scimemi, Giovanni Corbellini, Francesco Repishti.

The current global condition of architecture will then be explored by Tatiana Bilbao—a prominent voice on the contemporary scene—through her work and a conversation on the relationship between design, nature, ecosystems.

Architecture will also be discussed with some of the protagonists of the exhibition Vitality of Italian Architecture 1946–2026, presently at MAXXI: Labics, Demogo, Kuehn Malvezzi, Modus, photographer Allegra Martin, and the design team dotdotdot. The younger generation will be given a voice in a subsequent panel, chaired by Caterina Micucci and Claudia Orsetti, featuring Giulio Marchetti (HPO), 6A Architects, AMAA.

As a bridge between architecture and art, one panel will be dedicated to the story of the Ars Aevi Museum in Sarajevo, founded immediately after the war and still awaiting completion of the Renzo Piano addition. The conversation—which will also address the current situation of the Bosnian art and architecture scene—will include Senka Ibrisimbegović, Irhana Šehović, Dunja Krvavac, Emanuela Baglietto (RPBW).

Art, in the form of performance and site-specific production, returns to Demanio with the site-specific work Taumatropio by Oliviero Fiorenzi, with Studio Ossigeno for the architectural design and Andrea La Pietra for the acoustic dimension.

Another science-oriented conversation will be dedicated to the changing relationship between nature, culture, society, staging Paolo Conte, Andrea Borgnino, Cristina Sivieri Tagliabue, Giovanni Boccia Artieri, Massimiliano Tonelli.

Films—including projects by the LINA fellows Valera Prozera, Studio After, the Al-'ar d team—along with sound productions (from RaiPlay Sound) and publications (the 25th issue of Mappe) will complete the program for this edition.
