La Monte Young and Jung Hee Choi: Studies in Bowed Disc, Seven

On September 5, 2026, at 6pm, Leeum Museum of Art will present a special performance within Dream House in conjunction with the exhibition, Inside Other Spaces: Environments by Women Artists, 1956–1976. 

The performance features two sculptural instruments created for and dedicated to La Monte Young by Walter De Maria and Robert Morris. The program pairs the public premiere of Jung Hee Choi’s Seven (2024), performed on Walter De Maria’s The Instrument for La Monte Young (1966), with Young’s Studies in the Bowed Disc (1963), performed on Robert Morris’s Gong for La Monte Young (1963).

Structured around the seventh harmonic and the number seven, Seven amplifies the subtle sounds generated by a ball rolling within a metal box, transforming De Maria’s sculpture into a sustained sonic environment. Widely recognized as a landmark of 1960s avant-garde music, Studies in the Bowed Disc exemplifies Young's early exploration of sustained sound and duration through the friction-generated resonances of a bowed metal disc.

Presented within Dream House (1966–ongoing), one of the world's most important sound-and-light environments, the performance offers a rare opportunity to experience the conceptual vision and distinctive sounds embodied in instruments conceived by and for some of the most influential figures in postwar avant-garde art and music. At the same time, it affirms Dream House as a living work that continues to evolve across generations.

About the exhibition

Inside Other Spaces: Environments by Women Artists, 1956–1976 reexamines the history of pioneering “environments” created by women artists that were long excluded from art historical narratives. The exhibition invites visitors to step “inside” the “other(ed) spaces” envisioned by these artists—spaces that challenged artistic conventions through synesthetic, immersive experiences and proposed new ways of seeing, sensing, and engaging with art.

Originating at Haus der Kunst, Munich, in 2023 before traveling to MAXXI, Rome, and M+ Hong Kong, the exhibition features full-scale reconstructions of environments by women artists from Asia, Europe, and North and South America. Alongside works by Judy Chicago, Lygia Clark, Laura Grisi, Aleksandra Kasuba, Lea Lublin, Marta Minujín, Tania Mouraud, Nanda Vigo, and Tsuruko Yamazaki, Leeum presents Muche-Jeon(1970) by Jung Kangja, a leading figure in Korea’s experimental art scene of the 1960s and 1970s. Reconstructed through extensive research, the work is presented to the public for the first time since its forced dismantling under government censorship in 1970. 

The Seoul presentation also features Dream House (1966–ongoing), the collaborative work of Marian Zazeela, La Monte Young, and Jung Hee Choi. A canonical work in the history of sound-and-light environments, Dream House is presented in Asia for the first time.

The exhibition is on view at Leeum Museum of Art through November 29, 2026.
