While most of you are enjoying a well-deserved summer break, we’re delighted to announce what’s coming up next at the Independent School for the City.
From September onwards, we’re offering a diverse series of education studios for everyone eager to learn or experience something new. First up in September is our annual Film & Architecture Studio, followed by the international studio Building a Non-Waste Community in Normandy. We’ll continue the year with a unique Research by Photography studio tutored by the one and only Ellie Uyttenbroek, and, last but not least, we’ll offer a research workshop exploring Housing First and its potential to radically transform homelessness policy.
Alongside these studios, we have an exciting line-up of lecture evenings, such as our monthly School’s Out! In September we’ll welcome landscape architect Pablo Georgieff about his work with Coloco. In October we’ll be joined by Elke Krasny on the relationship between “caring about” and “caring for”, and in November architect and exhibition designer Afaina de Jong will talk about her work and methods. In addition, this season’s Back to School with…, curated by Dérive, will explore the spatial and cultural impacts of digital technologies, and in November, we’ll organise an evening on Visible and Invisible Queerness in the City.

Film & Architecture Studio 2026—We are the City
September 4–October 8, 2026
An introduction to the language of film as a way to explore the relationship between film, cities and architecture, supervised by architect, curator, and filmmaker Jord den Hollander.
Building a Non-Waste Community in Normandy
September 21–26, 2026
A hands-on international workshop with Césare Peeren of Superuse Studios, taking place in Vire, Normandy. We will stay at the farm or at the nearby old factory and adapt to its 24-hour cycle of sleeping, working, cooking, eating, talking, learning and resting.

A studio exploring the style and gathering places of the urban tribes of Pendrecht and Zuidwijk, through photography, using Slinge as our runway.
Housing First! Fighting Homelessness
November 20, 27 & December 4, 2026
A three-day studio exploring Housing First as a concept to radically transform homelessness policy around the world. On the roots, challenges, and possibilities of this strategy, including its implications for architecture and urbanism.

Visible and Invisible Queerness in the City

An evening with Jaime Starr of the British National LGBTQ+ Museum and researcher and writer Colin Keays. Organised in collaboration with Queer Built—an initiative of queer spatial professionals in the Netherlands, promoting inclusive architecture and giving voice to queer perspectives in the built environment.
School’s Out! 63 with Afaina de Jong

A talk about Afaina’s work with AFARAI, which crosses the boundaries of traditional architectural practice, encouraging change on social and spatial issues while accommodating differences.
