2025–26: infrastructures of x-change book launch

Carnegie Mellon Architecture (CM—A) is proud to announce the launch of x-change, our annual publication showcasing work from first-year students to PhD candidates. Inaugurated in 2017 as EX-CHANGE, the publication has since evolved into x-change to more pointedly reflect its role as a platform for critical discourse and reflection.

The book was designed by Studio Elana Schlenker and Jordi Ng, and co-edited by Tuliza Sindi and Meredith Marsh. The x-change exhibition of work, What’s for Lunch? discursive dining around three grand challenges, was on view in the College of Fine Arts Great Hall from August 24 to September 4, 2026.

Each year, the publication looks critically at the ideas, methods and pedagogical frameworks that shape CM—A’s programs, to position student work within broader disciplinary conversations around architectural research and practice.

The publication becomes a platform for articulating the range of questions that CM—A is both framing and engaging with, as it captures its sociocultural climate while acting as a record of the depth and breadth of student work produced each year.

2025–26 theme: “infrastructures of x-change”
For the publication’s tenth anniversary, x-change returns in a reflexive state regarding what it has become: an infrastructure of assembly and a critical scaffold for gathering. Across its ten years, the publication has operated less as a curated argument than as a recurring system that’s part archive, part interface, and part conversation, in which diverse and sometimes conflicting practices are placed into proximity, allowing difference to exist alongside one another, toward unearthing wonderfully contradictory questions and dispositions. This volume embodies ten years of what it’s taken to stabilize infrastructural conditions of assembly across editorial shifts, material evolutions, institutional memory, collective labor, and love, and leads an optimistic path to its future.
