The University Gallery of the Angewandte is kicking off the new academic year with two new exhibitions at the Heiligenkreuzerhof: in the Refectory, the Portuguese art association Maumaus explores the role of collections at art academies in their exhibition An der Postsparkasse nachts um halb eins (At the Post Office Savings Bank at half past midnight), whilst in the Sala Terrena, Mel e Logan combines scientific research and artistic activities in her exhibition Inter Acting Buggy Worlds.
The worlds featured in the exhibition Inter Acting Buggy Worlds (opening: November 4) have emerged from an exploration of bodily fluids and acoustic activation—phenomena that remain hidden from view in our everyday lives. Artist and curator Mel e Logan, a lecturer in the Department of Digital Arts at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, brings together collaborative works—including paintings, video projections and interactive sound sculptures—and links them within a sphere of art and science that draws closely on the “Salon” and the tradition of artistic activities influenced by scientific research in the early 20th century. In this context, humans move as interacting beings, much like their microbial components in a web of interdependencies, whilst simultaneously following their own instinct for survival.
In the refectory, the exhibition An der Postsparkasse nachts um halb eins (At the Post Office Savings Bank at half past midnight) (opening: October 20) brings together “objects of interest”—objects that are not necessarily to be regarded as works of art, but nor are they necessarily the opposite. Material objects and readymades form just as much a part of the exhibition as TV, film and radio features.
In collaboration with Collection and Archive of the University of Applied Arts Vienna, Maumaus explores the Angewandte’s depot as a body sustained by labour, which is simultaneously permanently present and absent within the rooms of the Heiligenkreuzer Hof in a “live broadcast”. Maumaus’s imagined authorship is thus reflected in the, as it were, imagined presence of the archive.
