Un/learning, shifting, connecting, constructing, reflecting and sustaining: the MA programme in Art Education with the major Critical Social Practice in Art Education is dedicated to artistic-educational work that considers the dynamics shaping everyday life and the surrounding structures. During the two-year programme, we explore the intersection of artistic and social practices and consider how these encounters can generate new ways of learning, imagining and acting together. We develop artistic and pedagogical approaches to enquiry and collaboration, aiming to critically engage with and contribute to social change.

The programme follows questions and approaches of cultural labour, mediation and critical art education, building on the long tradition of artist-educators working at the intersection of art, education and society. It prepares students for a wide range of professional roles, including the development and leadership of educational and outreach programmes in schools, museums, cultural institutions and community settings. Students will also learn to initiate and manage artistic and educational projects in areas such as adult education, social and healthcare services, political education and civic engagement. Throughout the programme, we collaborate closely with communities, neighbourhoods and institutions in education, art and culture, as well as other social organisations.

Major-minor
ZHdK’s major-minor study model enables students to customise their degree programme to the greatest possible extent. The major forms the core of the degree programme, which is thematically complemented or expanded upon by minors.

Who can apply
Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree and have experience in the arts or related social fields. If you view artistic and educational practice as collaborative efforts to reshape the conditions of learning, cooperation, and care, this programme offers an opportunity to deepen and professionalise your knowledge and practice.
