Join us at Bar Laika on Wednesday, November 18 from 7pm for the forty-first edition of Playback with Chantal Michelle.
Chantal Michelle is a composer and interdisciplinary artist whose work engages the spatial, tactile, and perceptual dimensions of sound. Her practice incorporates feedback systems, multichannel composition, and psychoacoustic phenomena to question the mutability of perception and its capacity to be disrupted or reconstructed. Her projects include site-responsive installations, hand-blown glass instruments, conceptual scores, and recorded works. Her latest album, All Things Might Spill (Shelter Press, 2026), stretches time into tense, long-held tones and clear melodic lines that resolve into suspended, dynamic soundscapes.
Michelle’s work and collaborations have been presented internationally, including at institutions and venues such as MoMA, the Royal Academy of Arts, Fridman Gallery, and Café OTO. She is a 2026–2027 Cité internationale des arts Artist-in-Residence and a 2026 Villa Aurora Fellow in Composition. She is also a recipient of the Arbeitsstipendium Ernste Musik und Klangkunst from the Berlin Senate. Her practice has been supported by the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, the Goethe-Institut, and the Feminist Center for Creative Work. Michelle holds an MFA from Bard College’s Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts.
Playback is a series of informal listening events curated by Kamran Sadeghi where record labels, musicians, composers, and producers feature recordings from their catalog, and premiere album pre-releases, archives, and other rarities.
