proyectoamil, Alta Tecnología Andina (ATA), and Corriente—Corriente—Encuentro Latinoamericano de Cine de No Ficción, with support from the British Council, present the work of Peruvian-British filmmaker Rose Lowder for the first time in the context of the Hay Festival Arequipa 2026. The presentation brings together a selection of her 16 mm films, her notebooks illustrating frame-by-frame maps of her films, and a special program of activities.
The presentation offers an opportunity to encounter Lowder’s work through both her films and the materials behind their making, bringing together cinema, drawing, observation, and a sustained engagement with the rhythms of the natural world.
Born in Lima in 1941, Rose Lowder moved to London, where she studied at Regent Street Polytechnic and Chelsea School of Art. Since the late 1960s, she has developed a filmmaking practice centered on observation, time, and the relationship between the image and the natural world. She currently lives and works in France.
A key figure in international experimental cinema, Lowder has developed a distinctive working method: she films and constructs her films frame by frame with a 16 mm Bolex camera, editing directly in the camera. Her notebooks, an essential part of her process, function as visual scores, letting her keep a meticulous record of her decisions during filming.
Her work is held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, and the Art Gallery of Ontario, and has been presented at institutions including Tate Modern, the Cinémathèque Française, the Art Institute of Chicago, and CalArts, among others.
