Alpha and Omega is a data audiovisual that focuses on the earthquakes that hit Pohang in 2017, and the different reactions of people living in Seoul and those in Pohang. I converted ten years’ worth of data on the seismic activity in the two cities into light and sound. The data was displayed on a graph in light and sound with Seoul’s data on the horizontal axis and Pohang’s on the vertical axis. Sound is L-Seoul’s data and R-Pohang’s data. Alpha and Omega deals with the emotional differences in people’s responses due to asymmetries in information and experience.

Alpha and Omega is one of seven shorts presented by the 18th edition of the Experimental Film and Video Festival in Seoul – EXiS, as part of a special selection on e-flux Video & Film, streaming for two weeks from October 28 to Novermber 11 and accompanied by a conversation between EXiS 2021 programmer Inhan Cho and e-flux’s Lukas Brasiskis. See the full program here.

The program is part of the series Festival Forum on e-flux Video & Film, presenting collaborations with established and emerging moving-image festivals from around the world.

Eunsol Kim works with interest in the relationship between human life and technology, and uses various media such as video, physical computing, and computation. Rather than taking an optimistic or pessimistic attitude toward technology, she is asking meaningful questions at the boundary and trying to practice escape-learning that disrupts the existing structure of consciousness. In recent years, she has been focusing on objects (history, disaster, environment) that are related to her in a physical and professional sense within the city, based on thorough observation, and expressing them in corresponding media. Kim Eun Sol studied photography, video, and media art and participated in group exhibitions and screenings such as Seoul Photo Festival (2011), Juan Media Festival (2013), and Geumcheon Art Factory (2015). She won the Experimental Film And Video Festival in Seoul – EXiS Jungwoon AWARD (2011) and the DaVinci Creative Competition (2015). She is also active in media-art education and research.
