Satellite 13: Chatter Blip and Bookworms

Join us at Bar Laika for the thirteenth edition of Satellite, featuring live performances by Chatter Blip and Bookworms. 

Chatter Blip is Dafna Naphtali on sound processing, electronics and voice, and Chuck Bettis on electronics and throat. 

Dafna Naphtali is an electronic-musician, singer, composer-improviser-performer of experimental, interactive electro-acoustic music using her custom Max/MSP programming for live sound processing. She creates works for multi-channel audio, music robots, and interactive soundwalks. She draws on an eclectic musical background in jazz, classical, rock and near-eastern music, to interpret Cage, Stockhausen and other contemporary composers. Her recordings and collaborations include What is it Like to be a Bat? with Kitty Brazelton, Pulsing Dot with Gordon Beeferman, Chatter Blip with Chuck Bettis, and Ear to Ivory with Kathleen Supové. Her audio-augmented reality soundwalks as free apps (iOS/Android) for U-GRUVE AR platform by Richard Rodkin– include Walkie Talkie Dream Garden currently running at the Williamsburg Waterfront (Brooklyn, NY) and Walkie Talkie Dream Angles running at Washington Square Park (NYC). 

Chuck Bettis was raised in the fertile harDCore soil, nourished within Baltimore’s enigmatic avant garde gatherings, and currently blossoming in New York’s downtown musical tribe. His unique blend of electronics and throat has led him into various collaborations with John Zorn, Fred Frith, Matmos, Dafna Naphtali, Yoshimio, Mephista Afrirampo, Ikue Mori, Nautical Almanac, Berangere Maximin, Yellow Swans, Toshio Kajiwara, Jad Atoui to name a few. He also has a long history of playing in punk bands (most notably the experimental punk band Meta-matics as well as the enigmatic All Scars). Bettis has created soundtracks for short films by Motoko Fukuyama & provided live music for the Move Move Collective dance performances.

Nicholas Dawson (Bookworms) is a Los Angeles-born, New York-based electronic composer. His work is often concerned with various modes of representation and interpretation through audio and non-linear living sonic histories. By way of advanced synthesis, generative sequencing and audio collage, Dawson accesses detuned realities, and conjures harmonics, rhythms and ghosts of the truths which have come to signify across time and space through repetition a multi-dimensional blues. He has released music through L.I.E.S. Records, Anòmia, BANK Records, DFA, Bánh Mi Verlag, and Break World Records. Dawson has performed in varying contexts internationally, ranging from clubs like Contact Tokyo and squat raves in Germany and Mexico, to festivals like Out Festival Portugal and Off Festival Katowice, to art spaces and museums like MoMA PS1, ISSUE Project Room, and The Museum of Fine Arts alongside the likes of Charlemagne Palestine, Moor Mother, Drew McDowell, DJ Stingray, Sun Ra Arkestra, and Rrose. His monthly residency, Confused House at Bossa Nova Civic Club in Brooklyn has been a space for open-format electronic experimentation since 2013, hosting performances from artists such as Juliana Huxtable, Traxx, Bill Kouligas, Foodman, and Shyboi. Dawson also co-founded the Confused House record label with Jason Letkiewicz aka Steve Summers in 2013. Currently, he is part of two collaborative live and recording projects with Dylan Scheer (Via App) and Leila Bordreuil, respectively.
