The Royal College of Art is the UK’s only entirely postgraduate art and design university. In the 2018/19 academic year, the College has some 2,300 students registered for MA, MRes, MPhil and PhD degrees and over 400 permanent academic, technical and administrative staff, with more than 800 visiting lecturers and professors. The College’s international reputation as the world’s leading art and design university has been recognised for four successive years by the highly-regarded QS World Ranking survey in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018.

In the School of Communication, research and teaching looks to transform human and non-human communication within the frames of culture, community, consciousness, commercialism and creativity. In a world of rising inequalities, global challenges, and false news, it is imperative that we change the narrative of communication. Based on deep disciplinary learning with opportunities for interdisciplinary working and collaboration, the School is ideally placed to take on projects which innovate and extend practice while ensuring depth of subject expertise.

The MA Visual Communication Programme, located within the School of Communication, has a long-standing reputation for providing students with the foundation and critical reflection to challenge, reframe and situate their individual practice within a world context. At no time is this more pertinent than today. The Programme provides students with the opportunity to challenge, transform and situate creative practice in relevance to global audiences. It expands the contribution of visual communication through an approach that values agency, experimentation and critical making.

We are seeking a Head of Programme for Visual Communication, who is a proven leader of international stature in the expanded field of Visual Communication with a significant contribution to graphic or interaction design, illustration or experimental communication. They will provide hands-on academic leadership and take overall responsibility for academic quality and direction, research, teaching and learning, and management of all the resources of the Programme and staff teams. They will work closely with the Development and Alumni Relations Office to garner support for Visual Communication and wider College developments.

You will be intellectually curious and committed to seeking out interdisciplinary opportunities both within the RCA and among other cultural, scientific or educational organisations nationally and internationally. You will be accomplished in delivering outstanding teaching and student experience, internationally excellent research, and networks on an international scale. Ideally, you will have experience in securing competitive research grants and be able to play a leading role in contributing to the design of cross-School and/or cross-College academic provision as the College develops its academic framework to facilitate new academic initiatives and flexible modes of learning.
