The Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague offers seven exceptional master programmes and the opportunity for a PhD track in the Arts in collaboration with Leiden University.

Master Artistic Research (two years / full-time)
This fine art programme seeks artists with research-based practices, and a desire to engage with critical reflection. The intensive curriculum is designed to support and develop these interests, through a critical focus on method, material, and ways of looking. There are also regular exhibition opportunities, excursions, and guests.

Head of the department Janice McNab

ArtScience (two years / full-time)
This unique programme offers students the opportunity to transform their professional art practice through a truly interdisciplinary curriculum that oscillates between the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) and the Royal Conservatoire. ArtScience is also closely linked with Leiden University’s Media Technology Master. In this context, art and science are considered as a continuum out of which developments of new art forms and artistic languages occur.

Head of the department Taconis Stolk

Master Industrial Design (two years / full-time)
Using artistic research, cultural consciousness and technical innovation in the industry as a basis to work from, the programme educates designers to become professionals who critically investigate and shape the industrial field. Students will be working on design products and projects with social relevance in collaboration with partners and industries inside and outside the academy.

Head of the department Maaike Roozenburg

Master Interior Architecture (INSIDE) (two years / full-time)
INSIDE is a programme that takes an interdisciplinary approach to the field of interior architecture. INSIDE is educating future designers for an innovative practice in spatial design with a focus on urgent current social and cultural challenges. INSIDE also places a strong emphasis on collaborations with key architectural offices and researchers.

Head of the department Hans Venhuizen

Master Non Linear Narrative (two years / full-time)
This programme merges investigative methods of journalism and forensics with processing technologies of computer science and visual arts into a contemporary, avant-garde design discipline: the Non Linear Narrative. It analyses the relations of complex socio-political issues, and how they can be communicated to a broad audience. The programme repositions the graphic design discipline in the changing professional landscape and extends it with new responsibilities towards society.

Co-heads of the department Roosje Klap en Niels Schrader

Master Photography & Society (two years / full-time)
The programme of Photography & Society aims to educate students into socially-engaged photographers with a 21st century attitude. The curriculum allows students with an active interest in the technological, political, environmental and social role of the photograph to develop impactful strategies through research. The core of Photography & Society is image-making, but the programme also challenges students to foster encounters beyond photographic practice and utilise photography as a means to take part in global debate.

Co-heads of the department Lotte Sprengers and Rob Hornstra

TypeMedia (two year / full-time)
At TypeMedia students build on their knowledge of type design, letterforms, typography, and lettering. Experts, teachers, visiting faculty and designers from the field fill a packed curriculum. Courses include calligraphy, stone carving, form studies, research, sketching techniques, design methods, coding, tool building and also workshops in Cyrillic and Arabic scripts.

Head of the department Erik van Blokland

PhD track
Artists and designers can also apply for participation in a doctoral programme in artistic research. A PhD research training programme for visual artists and designers is offered at Leiden University in collaboration with KABK through PhDarts.
