University of the Arts Bremen (HfK) offers a diverse range of courses in the fields of art, design and music, with productive and integrative dialogue between the degree programs being central to the university, its teaching and research environment.

The Department of Art and Design at University of the Arts invites applications for an appointment in philosophy as: Professor of Philosophy (f/m/d). Pay grade W2 / Civil servant status for life / Reference WP 23/16. The term of appointment is expected to begin on April 1, 2024.

The area of the search will be for a candidate demonstrating a strong teaching and research record in philosophy with robust emphasis on the reflection of art, media and design, especially of the present day.

Of particular interest will be candidates whose research and teaching profile exemplifies a broad and forward-looking approach to philosophical positions in their historical depth and its applications, including current cultural, technological, social and geopolitical discussions.

The applicant must show an explicit interest in today’s phenomena in art, design and media, including critical theories of the global South and North.

The professorship, located in the Department of Art and Design, is expected to teach and advise in particular students of fine arts, integrated design and digital media at both undergraduate and graduate level. Within the academic spectrum of University of the Arts Bremen, the successful candidate will work interdisciplinarily, closely cooperating with art, design and media studies. Therefore, engagement both with practice-based and theory-driven faculty members, collaboration on artistic-design and interdisciplinary academic projects in teaching and research, as well as experience in the acquisition of third-party funding are expected. University of the Arts Bremen also offers an artistic PhD program in a binational context. Partaking in the program is also desired.

Applicants must have a related doctorate in a humanities or cultural studies subject, habilitation or habilitation-equivalent writings and relevant publications in the subject area of the teaching field as well as proven pedagogical aptitude through at least one year’s experience in teaching at a university or comparable institution. The language of instruction is German and English. General duties may include (but are not limited to): active participation in the further development of University of the Arts Bremen, cooperation and participation in committees of academic self-administration (official language German). The performance of the professorship requires the continuous engagement on site at University of the Arts Bremen.

Furthermore, the hiring requirements according to section 116 of the Bremen Civil Service Act (Bremisches Hochschulgesetz) apply analogously.
