Join us at e-flux Screening Room on Saturday, April 8, at 5pm for Electric Dreamers, a screening of four captivating portraits of electronic musicians by the artist and filmmaker Marie Losier.
Marie Losier is known for her intimate unconventional portraits of musicians and artists that are characterized by a distinct visual style, blending elements of documentary, experimental cinema, and performance art. With an emphasis on electronic musicians, this screening will feature Losier’s critically acclaimed documentary The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye, which tells the story of the exceptional relationship between Genesis P-Orridge, the late founder of the industrial band Throbbing Gristle, and their partner Lady Jaye. The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye will be preceded by three compelling short films: Waltz Me Trust Me, a whimsical exploration of movement and sound, features the performance of electronic musician, composer, and sound artist Felix Kubin; Electric Storm - 100 Years of Theremin is a tribute to the electronic instrument and its influence on modern music; and Alan Vega, Just a Million Dreams, is a moving and intimate portrait of the late Alan Vega, the frontman of the legendary electronic protopunk duo Suicide.
Electric Storm - 100 Years of Theremin (2020, 5 minutes)
Composer Dorit Chrysler and filmmaker Marie Losier bring the new Moog Claravox Centennial on a journey where no theremin has gone before. The film celebrates the beginning of electronic music marked by the 100th birthday of the Theremin. Dorit Chrysler envisioned its setting in a “Cathedral of Science,” namely at CERN, the international Nuclear Research Center in Geneva.
Alan Vega, Just a Million Dreams (2014, 13 minutes)
This intimate portrait reveals uncommon stories of groundbreaking visual artist and pioneer of minimalist electronic rock Alan Vega, vocalist and composer for 1970s and ’80s punk/post-punk duo Suicide.
Waltz Me Trust Me (2019, 4 minutes)
Musical performance of Felix Kubin at the piano, but not any piano… an AIR PIANO!
The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye (2011, 67 minutes)
An intimate, affecting portrait of the life and work of ground-breaking performance artist and music pioneer Genesis Breyer P-Orridge (Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV) and his wife and collaborator Lady Jaye, centered around the daring sexual transformations the pair underwent for their Pandrogyne project.
