The Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design at Georgia State University is pleased to announce the Welch Visiting Artist and Scholar Lecture Series for the 2016/17 academic year. The program provides our students with access to a diverse mix of renowned artists and scholars that encourage artistic discourse, as well as lead workshops and studio critiques. The lectures spark fresh perspectives and insight for a greater understanding of contemporary art.

Co-Editor of the Journal of Cultural Research in Art Education and Editor of Convergence of Contemporary Art, Visual Culture, and Global Civic Engagement. Shin was awarded the USSEA Ziegfeld Service Award (2013) and Pacific Region Higher Education Art Educator of the Year (2010).

Roger Stahl
For those in the West, contemporary conflicts appear through the gunsight, the crosshairs, and especially the drone camera. The talk seeks to understand the weaponization of the civic gaze as a primary battleground in the War on Terror.

Chief Curator at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts in Nashville, TN since 2002 and has curated exhibitions addressing various issues surrounding the body in visual art resulting in some of the most compelling exhibitions in the Southeast.

Renowned for provoking dialogue about international politics and internal dynamics through high profile, technologically-driven art projects that employ the use of robotics, the internet, and photographic mobile mapping.

Sonya Clark**
Hair Craft Project. Hairdressers are Clark’s heroes. The poetry and politics of black hair care specialists are central to Clark’s work as an artist and educator. Rooted in a rich legacy, their hands embody an ability to map a head with a comb and manipulate the fiber we grow into complex form.

Stanley Wolukau-Wanambwa
Photographer, writer, and editor of The Great Leap Sideways, artist in residence at Light Work in 2015, guest edited the spring 2016 Aperture PhotoBook Review, and has written catalogue and monograph essays for Vanessa Winship, George Georgiou and Paul Graham.

Celina Jeffrey
Editor of the new anthology, The Artist as Curator, published by Intellect (2015), and founder and editor of Drain Magazine, A Journal of Contemporary Art and Culture. Jeffrey’s new project, Ephemeral Coast is the recipient of a SSHRC Insight Grant.
Dena Seidel
Seidel explores creative intersections between documentary, fiction and experimental filmmaking within a character driven narrative arc blending film languages and framing conventions to engage the audience on a journey. Seidel directed the award winning feature documentary Antarctic Edge: 70° South.
Marlene McCarty
McCarty works across various media and is the co-founder of the trans-disciplinary design studio Bureau along with Donald Moffett. Using everyday materials such as graphite, ballpoint pen, and highlighter, McCarty probes issues ranging from sexual and social formation to parricide and infanticide.
Kate Palmer Albers
Albers’ book Uncertain Histories: Accumulation, Inaccessibility, and Doubt in Contemporary Photography (University of California Press, 2015), addresses the limits of photography’s ability to narrate the past and argues that doubt and inaccessibility can generate a space for a productive uncertainty that is as culturally valuable as information and clarity.
Previous visiting artists include Amanda Ross-Ho, Nicole Eisenman, Chris Wiley, Dianna Cohen, Steffani Jemison, Ryan McLaughlin, Nnenna Okore, The Propeller Group, Jaap Blonk, Math Bass, Jess T. Dugan, Art Werger, Bibiana Obler, and Steve Locke, among others.
