Body as Site: Thematic Residency
Program dates: January 16–February 17, 2017
Apply by September 21, 2016

The body is the central site through which we experience the world around us; interact with cultural, political, and social constructs, and move through our experiences.

Body as Site is a five-week residency program that invites artists, designers, architects, curators, and researchers to explore the body as a site of investigation in contemporary art.

Through group discussions, reflection, individual studio time, critiques, and workshops this residency will provide a platform for a diversity of creative activity. Topics to explore will include: collaborative practices and the collective body, embodied knowledge, nomadism, diaspora, cultural and social habitats, performance, fashion, operational aesthetics, wearable technology, architecture, and the body’s relationships to objects, spaces and environments.

On hand for the residency will be guest faculty Lucy Orta (Chair of Art and the Environment at University of Arts London), a Paris-based installation artist whose work bridges fashion, sculpture, and architecture.

Funding available, see program page for details.

BAiR Emerging

Apply by October 19, 2016

Banff Artist in Residence (BAiR) Emerging is an immersive program of studio practice, creative exploration, and critical feedback for artists in the early stages of their careers. BAiR Emerging combines the artistic freedom of a self-directed residency with the supportive benefits of an organized program. As well as having the space to create, research, and experiment, participants are part of a community of emerging artists committed to developing and expanding their practice.

This program will provide professional development opportunities for emerging artists by opening up new possibilities and directions in the production of their work. Our knowledgeable staff will be readily available to provide support, direction, and access to our extensive facilities. Curator Jacqueline Bell and visiting artist Anne MacMillan (Emerging Atlantic Artist Award recipient) will be on-hand for consultation and studio visits.
