The Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design is a new type of art academy that rises to the challenge of making and thinking art and design in interaction with new and familiar technologies. It stands for broad-minded openness to the world outside and exceptional freedom in its internal academic structure. There are no departments in the traditional sense, only courses open to all. An international team of professors from nearly a dozen different countries work to realize an ideal of teaching as an applied poetics of relationships. Communication design, product design, media art, exhibition design and scenography, art research and media philosophy—all are taught and learned in an environment of transdisciplinary, cross-media openness.
The traditional academic freedom represented by non-modular courses of study is highly valued at the university. The interlinked art and design programs conclude with an examination for the Diplom degree, the theory programs with the Magister. These degrees are and will continue to be internationally recognized; compatibility with European standards is guaranteed. Students in the theory programs must choose a practical subject as their secondary focus; students in the practical programs must study a theoretical subject. Students can also pursue doctorates on topics in both art and media theory.
Academic year 2016/17: new directions, time-tested freedoms
The Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design has some striking innovations in store for the start of the 2016/17 academic year. Subjects in the humanities will be taught as a combination of art theory and media theory, as they were in the university’s earliest years, with philosophy retaining its distinctive identity as the special art of thinking.
Italian media theorist Matteo Pasquinelli will develop a poetics and critique of networks and artificial intelligences in close connection with the practice of art and design. Johan F. Hartle of Amsterdam will focus art research and media theory on political aesthetics. Starting with the winter semester, art research courses will strongly emphasize the diversity of technical images in the arts and sciences. For the first time, a prominent artistic position from China will be represented on the faculty: Miao Xiaochun, professor for art photography, whose work centers on the theme of the technological imaginary. Communication design students will benefit from the teaching of Sereina Rothenberger and Rebecca Stephany. And acclaimed performance artists, video artists and filmmakers such as João Tabarra (Lisbon) and Răzvan Rădulescu (Bucharest) will address temporal aspects of synthetic images.

Admission requirements:
Prerequisite for the admission to the courses of study at the university is the general or subject-specific certificate of aptitude for higher education and the successful completion of an entrance examination.
Alternative educational qualifications may be accepted as well; see section 58, paragraph 2 of the Baden-Württemberg Higher Education Act (LHG). In such cases, the Student Department Office and/or Examination Office will be happy to provide further information. For art research and media philosophy, knowledge of Latin or of two other foreign languages is also required. Knowledge of English is desirable for all programs.

As a remarkable culmination of two intensive semesters, students will confront the visitors with pioneering artistic and theoretical designs, works and products. A special highlight of the opening on July 14 is the concert of FM Einheit and N.U. Unruh, members of the German band Einstürzende Neubauten.
