Banff Research in Culture: On Energy

This residency takes on the challenge of energy—its pasts, present, and futures. Artists and researchers will help redefine the impact of energy on society, and imagine new ways of representing and thinking about energy for the coming transition.
Banff Research in Culture programs combine research and creation; academics and artists can carve out the time and space to further develop their ideas and projects within a supportive and rigorous community of diverse perspectives. Discussions and seminars, reading groups, talks and presentations by faculty and participants, demonstrations in artistic production, and studio visits are all a part of this program.
This program is open to current PhD researchers (ABD) and post-doctoral researchers beginning their careers. Artist applicants must have completed academic training in visual arts and demonstrate a commitment to professional practice.
Emerging Atlantic Artist Residency

Providing one emerging visual artist with strong ties to Atlantic Canada the opportunity to explore, expand, and develop their practice during a fully-funded, eight-week, self-directed residency at The Banff Centre. This program targets exceptionally talented emerging Canadian artists under the age of 35 who demonstrate the potential to make a significant contribution to the legacy of the arts in Canada.
Critical Art Writing Ensemble II

This program is open to art writers and curators exploring visual arts and art criticism as an aspect of literature. Those who seek poetic expression, and desire dedicated time, space and a committed, nurturing community in which to work are invited to apply. Lead by Andrew Berardini and Quinn Latimer, participants will delve into narrative and poetic potential, creative and engaging approaches to form, and highly distinctive points of view backboned by serious analysis. Reading groups, workshops, faculty talks and readings, and opportunities to share and develop your work are a part of this program.
BAiR Text

Banff Artist-in-Residence (BAiR) Text is a self-directed residency for artists exploring the intersection of language and aesthetics: conjuring, creating, and referencing text, poetics, and literature in their work.
This program offers four weeks of intensive studio time and opportunities for interaction, collaboration, and experimentation. Demonstrations in visual art production techniques will be offered, and our knowledgeable staff will be on hand to offer support and provide access to our world-class facilities. Take advantage of readings and public talks by guest faculty, as well as a studio visit with Walter Phillips Gallery curator Peta Rake.
Kiln Raising

Program dates: May 30–June 24, 2016
This residency will bring together emerging and established ceramic artists to create new work and explore kiln construction. Participating artists will delve into wood kiln history, theory, principles of design, construction and firing process with the goal of understanding and maximizing the nuances of wood firing and its relationship to form and surface. Discussions and workshops addressing clay-body formulation, wheel- and handbuilding processes, loading and firing strategies for atmospheric kilns, are also part of this residency. Additionally, artists will have time to explore independent projects and push their work in new creative directions through studio visits with faculty mentors and feedback from peers.
