The Davidoff Art Initiative (DAI) was launched in 2012 with the mission of supporting contemporary art and artists in the Caribbean, particularly the Dominican Republic, and fostering cultural engagement between the Caribbean region and the rest of the world. Now in its third year, the Initiative is pleased to announce the publication of Under the Sun: Caribbean Voices in Contemporary Art, a compendium of art, essays, and interviews capturing the range and dynamism of the Davidoff Art Initiative across its first years of operation. The book includes in-depth interviews and portfolios from Caribbean and international artists following their participation in the Davidoff Art Residency, as well as commentaries from leading art authorities offering insights into the Caribbean art scene.

Organized across three sections—Connecting the Caribbean; Perspectives on the Caribbean; and About the Davidoff Art Initiative—Under the Sun: Caribbean Voices in Contemporary Art offers readers an intimate portrait of the Caribbean’s singular creative landscape, along with the role of the Davidoff Art Initiative in providing visibility and support this vital contemporary art community.

In tandem with this milestone, DAI is pleased to announce that it has been bestowed the 2015 Dominican Association of Art Critics, Inc. (ADCA) Annual Critics Award.

The Annual Critics Award, presented by the Dominican Association of Art Critics, Inc. (ADCA) in affiliation with the International Association of Art Critics (AICA), honors the work of institutions and individuals working in and around the visual arts in the Dominican Republic. The award recognizes the Davidoff Art Initiative’s contribution to contemporary art in the Dominican Republic through its residency program and its support and facilitation of cross-cultural dialogue.

The Davidoff Art Initiative hosts annual residencies for international artists and curators at its newly built residency studios in La Romana, Dominican Republic, in collaboration with Altos de Chavón School of Design. Also through the Davidoff Art Residency, Dominican and Caribbean artists are provided support to participate in leading residency programs worldwide, making connections and earning exposure within global artistic networks while sharing their expertise with others in the region. The DAI also awards annual Davidoff Art Grants to assist the work of cultural organizations and institutions that are working to connect Caribbean art and artists to the world. A vibrant program of annual Art Dialogues and Art Editions round out the Davidoff Art Initiative, which is now widely recognized as one of the most innovative and comprehensive corporate initiatives in the visual arts sphere today.

Next year, Davidoff will invite members of the international cultural community to experience the rich social and cultural fabric of the Dominican Republic with the 2016 Davidoff Tour Gastronomique Art & Gourmet Weekend (February 18–21) at Casa de Campo, La Romana. The weekend will include open studio visits with the Davidoff Art Residency artists in Altos de Chavón, as well as culinary events with Three Michelin-starred Chef Peter Knogl and a visit to the Davidoff Estate in Santiago de los Caballeros.
