School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents TECHTONIC SHIFT, an exhibition of prints, video, and interactive installations by alumni and faculty of the MFA Computer Art Department. Curated by Milan DelVecchio, project coordinator, and Angelica Vergel, administrative assistant, the exhibition will be on view from October 24–November 25 at the SVA Flatiron Gallery.
In preparation for the department’s 30th anniversary next year, curators DelVecchio and Vergel wanted to take the opportunity to showcase the department’s outstanding fine art alumni and faculty. These artists have incorporated a variety of analog and digital media, experimenting with layers both technically and conceptually. Mel Hsieh’s video combines 35mm film footage with digital effects and 3D modeling; Federico Muelas’ compressed charcoal mural on paper symbolizes the morphological accidents created from environmental tension; and Kamil Nawratil’s CNC-milled acrylic light sculpture studies the patterns and adaptive properties of organic life within a digitally fabricated environment.
The MFA Computer Art Department emphasizes creative experimentation and a multidisciplinary approach to making art with computers and emerging technologies. Dedicated to producing digital artists of the highest caliber, the department guides each student in the development of a personal artistic style in a course of study that is individually tailored to meet his or her needs.
