The School of Art, Design and Media (ADM) at Nanyang Technological University Singapore (NTU), in collaboration with the NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore (NTU CCA Singapore), offers programmes leading to a Master of Art (Research) degree and a Doctor of Philosophy degree. This is the first time in Southeast Asia where a post-graduate degree is dedicated to the research focus of “Spaces of the Curatorial,” including the areas of “Curatorial Practice” and “Art in Public Space and Critical Spatial Practice.”

These pioneering programmes will allow MA students and PhD candidates to pursue independent research within the framework of contemporary critical discourse in the expanded field of contemporary art through interdisciplinary research. Students will have the opportunity to engage both in theory as well as with curatorial practice and critical practice, addressing spaces of the curatorial in a region that is culturally rich and highly diverse in its infrastructures. Singapore’s geographical position within Southeast Asia provides an ideal base for research with a particular focus on recent development in the arts and curation, archival practices, spaces of presentation and representation in Southeast Asia that are linked to its different historical trajectories.

Students of the programme will be supervised and taught by an international faculty including Ute Meta Bauer, curator and Founding Director of NTU CCA Singapore and Professor at ADM; Assistant Professor Michelle Lim (Contemporary Curating); and (Visiting) Professors at ADM and NTU. Students will pursue research in close proximity to NTU CCA Singapore’s Research Fellows, Artists-, and Curators-in-Residence. There will be multiple opportunities for students to partake in curatorial and research projects, exhibitions, symposia and other programmes at the NTU CCA Singapore, at ADM / NTU, and at other affiliated institutions in Singapore and beyond.

NTU CCA Singapore seeks applicants from diverse backgrounds with a strong interest in the expanded field of curating, and/or in the art ecosystems of Southeast Asia. Applicants should be independent, self-driven, and interested in taking part in the defining phase of this new area of study offered by ADM / NTU. The MA (Research) programme culminates in the preparation of a written thesis; alternatively, students may choose to produce a project alongside their thesis, with a possible focus on curatorial spaces and related discourses.

Admission is based on:
– A statement of intent
– A research proposal
– Samples of academic writing
– Academic record
