The School of Arts at Porto welcomes your application to the PhD Programme in Science and Technology of the Arts!

This programme encourages experimental research based on an overall multidisciplinary environment, which fosters the convergence among several research areas (arts, engineering, biology, life sciences, philosophy, economy, and others) to shift the research skills of artists and other actors involved in the artistic processes. The programme, coordinated by Paulo Ferreira-Lopes, joins and closely connects with international institutions, artists and researchers, such as Profs. Marcelo Wanderley, Chris Chafe, Erik Oña and Peter Beyls.

The curriculum structure is divided into two parts: one curricular, the other geared towards experimental research. While carrying out the research, students must prepare and defend a thesis in the field of Arts Technology (Interactive Art or Computer Music).

The excellent conditions and welcome offered to PhD students and other researchers involved in the programme are ensured by the School of Arts R&D unit – CITAR (Research Centre for Science & Technology of the Arts), supported by the Portuguese National Funding Agency for Science, Research and Technology (FCT) and member of the national network of research units.

Application requirements
Master’s degree or a legal equivalent degree or a graduation degree with a grade of 16 (out of 20) minimum, plus an especially relevant academic and/or scientific curriculum. (Regardless of field, the selection process will be based on curricular assessment, portfolio review and/or interview).

For all inquiries, please contact: Vânia Fernandes, [email protected].

The School of Arts – Catholic University of Portugal, founded in Porto in 1997, comprises two main areas: (1) Sound and Image and (2) Art and Heritage Conservation and Restoration.

The Research Center for Science and Technology of the Arts (CITAR) was created in 2004. CITAR’s activities embody a vast array of initiatives, displayed through the editions of CITAR Journal: scientific papers, presentation of artwork and the organization and co-organization of scientific and artistic meetings, both national and, in most cases, international.

The facilities of the School of Arts are divided between the Arts Building and the Restoration Building, with purpose-built spaces for each specific field.

The aim of the Sound and Image department is to promote creative talent in the audiovisual / digital / interactive arts fields, using available digital technologies and based on an understanding of Art, Science and Technology. This area responds to the profound reconfiguration of artistic practice, communication and entertainment and acts as a stimulus for encouraging the creative and cultural industries—sectors that are mainlines of action for development highlighted by European policies.

The School sees the study and the practice of art as vital areas, involving artistic creation and production of knowledge within the context of ethical values and a critical, reflexive positioning of humanist nature. Gathering an academic community of students, lecturers and researchers motivated by an atmosphere of dialogue, debate and progress, the School connects varying art perspectives with the issues of the contemporary world, drawing associations with activity sectors that make art what it is—a key element in the cultural, social and economic development of our country.
