CSAV–Artists Research Laboratory is a workshop for young artists held every year at the Fondazione Antonio Ratti. It aims to widen the knowledge of visual arts in both theoretical and practical aspects.  Detached from the traditional teaching methods, CSAV offers a unique experience that privileges improvisation, debate and experimentation.

For about a month, the participants live in Como working side by side with the invited artists. The workshop includes exhibitions, screenings and conferences held by artists, critics and specialists of diverse disciplines.

Materials for Performance, the 21st edition of the CSAV, will take place from July 6 to July 31, 2015. Yvonne Rainer and Andrea Kleine are the artists invited to lead the workshop.

Public events

Exhibitions and performances:
The Concept of Dust, or How do you look when there’s nothing left to move?
Yvonne Rainer’s performance
July 14 at 8pm at Teatro Sociale—Piazza Verdi, Como

The performance is an ongoing piece, originally commissioned by the Getty and Performa, and is the latest choreography made by Rainer. It sees her on stage along with five dancers–known as the Raindears–performing a work-in-progress piece where Rainer addresses strong themes such as aging and mortality. In The Concept of Dust, Rainer interweaves dance and texts, assembled from many different sources, dealing with ancient Middle East dynasties, paleontological findings and literary quotations. Intermittently read by Rainer and the dancers throughout the 45-minute piece, the texts run parallel to music and dance movements, interrupting the performers’ actions at times.

Corso Aperto

Yvonne Rainer, a co-founding member of the Judson Dance Theater in 1962, made a transition to filmmaking following a fifteen-year career as a choreographer/dancer (1960–75). After making seven experimental feature films, she returned to dance in 2000.

Her dances and films have been shown worldwide, and her work has been rewarded with museum exhibitions, fellowships and grants.

A memoir—Feelings Are Facts: a Life—was published by MIT Press in 2006. A selection of her poetry was published in 2011 by Paul Chan’s Badlands Unlimited.
